Date of Passing: Jan 11, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERNICE ISABELLA MARKES It is with great sadness that the family of Bernice Markes announces her passing on January 11, 2015, at the age of 89 years. She leaves behind her daughters Barbara Markes and Catherine (Don) Lewis, and granddaughters Erin and Alison; as well as her younger brothers Martin and David Semple. Born on September 5, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, Bernice was the eighth of 13 children. She lived in Toronto until graduating from Wycliffe College (Anglican Women's Training College) at which time she went on to work in Moose Factory, James Bay as a chaplain. In 1952, she married John Markes and moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. They raised their family in the Sault until 1993 when they moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their grandchildren. Bernice loved spending time with family. Her faith, strength, humour, love and optimism are the legacy she has left with her children and grandchildren and they know she is at peace. Bernice's family would like to thank the staff at Middlechurch Home who provided compassionate care for her as a resident for almost 10 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice. A funeral service to celebrate Bernice's life will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2015 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, with an optional viewing half hour prior.
