SHIRLEY GOODMAN
Date of Passing: Jan 10, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY GOODMAN Shirley Goodman passed away at Deer Lodge Centre on Saturday, January 10, 2015. She was 96. She was predeceased by her husband James Erin Goodman, and by her grandson Andrew. She will be missed but celebrated by her children Bev, Pat, Tom and Gord; in-laws Bill, Chuck, Sonia and Marian; grandchildren Peter, Erin, Cliff, Liz and Eric; their spouses Kaylyn, Derek and Kyle; and great-grandchildren Ethan, Julie, Calvin, Kinley, Virginia and Matthew. Shirley was the daughter of Ella (Somerville) and Rev. J.B.E. Anderson. She was born in Rivers, MB, and grew up as a "preacher's kid" in rural Manitoba. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1942 and served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in England in the Second World War. Following that, she worked in Flin Flon where she met Jim. They raised their family there with some time in Copperhill, Tennessee as well. Throughout her long and happy married life, Shirley was very supportive of Jim's musical undertakings. She loved music but her talents lay elsewhere. She was a great cook, and taught her kids in formal lessons. She was an expert knitter well into her 90s. She volunteered. She read. As her family grew, she entertained grandchildren with creative crafts on rainy days at the lake. She delighted in visits from family, especially young ones. She could never get enough hugs. Jim and Shirley retired to Winnipeg, but continued to summer at Beaver Lake, SK. Following Jim's death, Shirley lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence, then at Deer Lodge on a Veteran's unit. A memorial service will be held at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive on Friday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank the staff of Deer Lodge Tower 4 who helped her be as independent as possible and the staff of Lodge 3 for their care at the end of her life. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, a donation may be made to any favourite charity: one of her favourites was Osu Children's Library Fund c/o 188 Montrose Street, Winnipeg, MB R3M 3M7. Shirley was a second mother to me when Norma Coulter passed away and a tremendous anchor for our family as it grew to include the Brothers crew. We will always treasure our memories of visits at the lake, dinners at your house and visits at the Flin Flon lunches in Winnipeg. I am sorry to be late in learning of her passing, and I wish you all my heartfelt condolences. Jill - Posted by: Jill (Coulter) Salamon (Friend of the family) on: Feb 20, 2015

Your mom was a dear friend of my grandmother, parents and the Liss kids, a calm and compassionate lady who was a pillar of strength during tough times, a delightful hostess and great bridge player too! We send our love and prayers, Mari-Jean and Herb Nachtigall and family. - Posted by: Mari-Jean Nachtigall (Family friend) on: Jan 15, 2015

Over the years we have learned how highly-regarded Shirley was by her family and friends; how much she contributed to the communities where she lived and raised her children. We offer our prayers for the family who will gather this week to share their memories and their grieving. - Posted by: Alex and Carrie kaye (friends) on: Jan 14, 2015
