DOLORES SASS (nee Jeannotte) January 16, 1946 - January 7, 2015 Dolores Dodie Sass passed away in Winnipeg, MB as a result of complications following surgery on January 7, 2015 at the age of 68 years. Dodie was born at Ste. Rose du Lac, MB on January 16, 1946 to Joseph and Annette Jeannotte, both of whom predeceased her. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Bernie Sass, her children, Jason (Cindy) of Ottawa and Tamara of Winnipeg; grandchildren Shea, Kiley, and Kennedy; her sisters Janet Holburn (William) and Irene Oliphant (Jeff). Nephews and nieces include William Holburn Jr., Andrea Bernarding (Holburn), Scott Holburn, Joel Oliphant, Renae Oliphant, Dan Weir, Jerry Weir, Shaunda Wiebe, Kim Sass and Michael Sass. Dolores grew up happily on her family ranch in Meadow Portage, MB along the shores of Lake Winnipegosis. She attended school in Meadow Portage and Rorketon. In high school Dolores also attended St. Charles Academy in Winnipeg while her father Joseph served as a member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. Dolores then studied at the University of Manitoba where she graduated with her teaching certificate. On August 19, 1967, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life Bernie Sass. The wedding ceremony took place in Toutes Aides, MB, with a reception following in her future home of Winnipegosis, MB. Dolores was a talented, dedicated teacher who aimed to promote the self-confidence of her students while she worked at schools in Winnipegosis, Dauphin and Brandon during her teaching career. Her main teaching subject of French was her first language. Despite being very busy raising a young family and teaching, Dolores still pursued part-time University studies. She drove to Dauphin and Brandon for evening and weekend classes over several years before proudly attaining her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandon University in 1981. Dolores was an extremely proud, generous and supportive mother and grandmother. Some of Dodie's fondest memories were her times with family and friends at the Winnipegosis beach, the Jeannotte ranch, the family cabin on the Mossey River, family vacations, the trailer in Arizona and family Christmas celebrations. Sincere thanks to all the staff at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre Dialysis Unit for their care, with a special note of appreciation extended to Gord Basaraba. In lieu of flowers, donations to HSC dialysis unit are appreciated. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Avenue in Winnipeg, at 11:00 am. Luncheon will follow. An informal gathering and life celebration of Dodie is also planned to take place at Winnipegosis, MB in July 2015. Her ashes will be spread at special places where Dodie had fond memories with her family and friends. Two of Dodie's favourite quotes follow: Angels are watching over you with their wings wrapped gently around you, whispering you are loved and blessed. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings. (It's a Wonderful Life 1946 Film)

  • We are saddened to learn of Dolores' passing. We first met Dolores at Tim Horton's in the Grant Park Shopping Centre in Winnipeg in 2008. Dolores just came over, introduced herself and we had a great conversation. We were just in the process of moving to Winnipeg and so it was a pleasant surprise to make a new friend so quickly upon our arrival. We are praying for her family as they continue to grieve her loss. She will be missed. - Posted by: Paul and Amanda Hildebrand (Friend) on: Mar 04, 2015

  • My condolences to the family. I am so sorry for your loss. My relationship with Dolores began when we were grade twelve together at the Rorketon School and rode the bus to Meadow Portage. She kindly offered her home as a place to stay in Winnipegosis for my son Sheldon, when he played school sports with Jason. May the angels wrap you in their arms of care. - Posted by: Elsie Hill (classmate and friend) on: Jan 18, 2015
