DR. THOMAS PURDIE GRANT B.Sc. M.B. Ch.B. M.R.C.O.G. July 17, 1921 - January 18, 2015 In his 94th year Tom passed away at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born in East Kilbride, Scotland, he grew up in Glasgow and graduated from the University of St. Andrews in 1944. Tom then joined the Army as a "medic" and was posted overseas rising to the rank of Major. After the war he completed post graduate studies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He married Isobel in 1955 and immigrated to Canada in 1957 where he practiced medicine in Saskatchewan and Dauphin, Manitoba, before coming to Winnipeg. He truly loved being a country doctor in the days when house calls were the norm and prided himself in his thoroughness and in taking the time necessary to do things right - happily delivering many babies during that time. He was also a proud Rotarian and was especially fond of the Robbie Burns celebrations. He was a very kind and gentle soul. He enjoyed his long time involvement with the United Church including singing in the choir which he did into his 90s. Fishing, and particularly fly fishing, had always been his passion. In other activities such as golf, curling and many coffee outings he particularly enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends. He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Thomas and Jean (Lawrence) Grant, his brothers William and Lawrence, and sister Martha all of Scotland. He will be very much missed in their 60th year of marriage by his loving wife Isobel, their sons David, his wife Dawna, and Alasdair (Buzz), his wife Leslie, and grandchildren Andrew, Emma, Jean, Thomas, Ian and Christopher, and his nieces and nephews in Britain. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and staff at Health Sciences Centre GA3 for their tender and loving care. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dave, Dawna, Buzz and Leslie, I'm sorry to learn of your father's/father-in-law's death. I will not be able to join you at the memorial service, but I will be thinking of you and perhaps enjoy a wee dram of scotch on Friday evening in his memory. My condolences to you and to your mother. - Posted by: David Ramsay (friend of the family) on: Jan 21, 2015

  • Actually surprised to read of Tom's life accomplishments, though he always seemed such a kind gentleman, always ready to help others. Though clearly an intelligent man, he never boasted, or looked down on others. I was also surprised to read his age - he seemed to have the energy and interests of a younger man. My condolences, Isobel and family. - Posted by: Roberta Beach (neighbour) on: Jan 21, 2015
