HARVEY LORNE PHILLIPS June 13, 1949 - January 21, 2015 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harvey Phillips on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in Mesa, Arizona, with family at his side. Harvey is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Linda, his children Andrew and Michael (Erin) and grandchildren Charlotte and Christopher, sister Elaine (Dennis), brother-in-law Jim (Bev), sisters-in-law Pat (Albert) and Teresa and their families. Harvey was raised in St. James and met his future bride, Linda, at Deer Lodge Junior High. He will be well remembered by all who knew him by his subtle sense of humour and kind nature. Harvey could fix almost anything and was always there to lend a hand to anybody in need. During most of his 42 years at Standard Aero, Harvey travelled extensively around the world and became a well-respected ambassador for the company. His dedication was honoured at his recent retirement celebration. Harvey was an avid hockey fan, from watching and coaching his boys in their early years, to cheering on his favourite Boston Bruins. He also loved fishing and was especially pleased to fulfill his dream of a father/sons fishing trip this past summer. His favourite "sport" of all was the family cabin at Hillside Beach. Harvey could always find a good reason to go to the cabin in summer or winter. Whether it was to cut the grass, chop more firewood or to just sit and enjoy a good crossword challenge. Maintaining the cabin was a labour of love for Harvey and he will remain forever in his favourite place in the world. A celebration of Harvey's life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2015 at Deer Lodge Community Centre, 323 Bruce Ave. E. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends wish, donations may be made in Harvey's memory to the charity of their choice.

Condolences & Memories (20 entries)

  • Shocking news. I recently visited Std. Aero and saw Harvey just before he retired. We worked together in the past, myself in the US and Harvey in Canada. We met back in the 80's when I worked for S&S in Houston. Harvey was excited about retiring which makes this even more tragic. I'll never forget a conference Std. Aero hosted in Winnipeg which included a Jets game. Harvey was always eager to explain hockey to us from the south, but I could never understand "Icing" and why it mattered. Harvey would just laugh. My condolences to his family and Std. Aero brothers. - Posted by: Greg FitzGerrell (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2015

  • In 1991 I met Harvey and can only recall him as a friendly person, who knew what he was talking about. I went on several business trips with him and a well memorised fishing trip for teambuilding in which I can only recall him as a great guy. Although I have known him for just barely 1 year, after which I returned to Holland, I can only say that I'm saddened by the news that he has passed away. - Posted by: Mark van der Putten (Former Co-worker) on: Feb 23, 2015

  • Sincere condolences to the Phillips family regarding Harvey's recent passing. I knew Harvey during my career at Standard Aero. Harvey was a member of a select group of technical specialists authorized to support off site engine maintenance for customers in various parts of the world. It was amazing to hear some of the technical and logistic challenges he had to overcome in remote locations. He definitely went the extra mile to support his 501K customers. Definitely a neat guy to shoot the breeze with. - Posted by: Jim McLellan (Work Associate) on: Feb 18, 2015

  • Our sincere condolences to Linda and Family. Harvey was a great guy and I have many fond memories of working with him at Standard. His reputation in the industry was impeccable and he always took the time to teach a lot of us the ropes. Some of those fishing trips with Harv and the rest of the boys from Standard were memories you never forget. We especially enjoyed getting to spend some time with Harvey and Linda when they moved to San Antonio. Rest in peace Harvey. - Posted by: Terry & Tanis Hastman (Friend and Coworker) on: Jan 28, 2015

  • Met Harvey in the late 70's on my first day working for Standard Aero. Harvey was famous for keeping us young punks in line at work, but fell a bit short on those memorable snowmobile outings. I worked almost day to day with Harvey when we both lived in San Antonio Texas and we all became close friends. Had fun times getting together on weekends or holidays. One of Harvey's famous sayings was "it's impossible to win at this game without some wild-cards". How true that is buddy...going to miss ya. • Harvey taught so many of us at Standard Aero, and not just about engines. He was generous with his time and knowledge, quick with a subtle joke, and was well respected by everyone - co-workers, customers, and competitors. - Posted by: Brady Ryall (former co-worker) on: Jan 26, 2015

  • Harvey was one of the first "old timers" at Standard Aero to give me a chance as a long haired know it all kid!! He was a great mentor, and friend. He will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Randy Corrigal (Co-worker) on: Jan 26, 2015
