OSCAR ARNI HANNESON
Date of Passing: Jan 22, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOSCAR ARNI HANNESON Peacefully with his family by his side, Oscar Arni Hanneson passed away at Lions Prairie Manor on January 22, 2015 at the age of 90. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Grace of 68 years and his family of five children, Bill, Gail (Chris Judd), David (Lori), Lindsay (Thelma), Denise (Chuck Lortie) and their families, fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, his sister in-law Edna (Jim Bell). Oscar is predeceased by his mother and father Oli and Magnusina (nee Magnusson), his in-laws Grace and Bill Websdale, his sister Beatrice, his daughter-in-law Phyllis Hanneson, and his nephew Jeffrey Bell. Oscar was born in Portage la Prairie and lived most of his life in Lakeland. An only son, he farmed with his father for a time and then on his own. He married Grace "Winkie" Websdale of Plumas in 1946 and together they began their farm life. Oscar's passion and love was his family foremost and then farming. He loved the land the smell of newly broken soil, the thrill of seeing his crops grow. He truly was salt-of-the-earth. Oscar was very proud of his Icelandic heritage, his family, and the fruits of his labour. A man of strong faith and community, he was a curler, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, a Charter member of the Langruth Elks, and a past master of the Gladstone Masonic Lodge, to name a few. In 2002, Oscar and Grace retired to Portage la Prairie. Music was another of his loves in his youth, he mastered the saxophone and he and his cousins started a community band called the "Langruth Serenaders". They played for dances and barn dances far and wide. In fact, it was at a dance in Ogilvie that he asked to be introduced to the love of his life - Grace. His education was in a one room schoolhouse at Lakeside. He was an avid reader, especially of history and had a whole library of community histories. He impressed the importance of education to his family and was a constant role model for us. He could be found each day with papers and magazines spread out all around the table. He could speak to any topic in these papers or magazines. He was the go-to person for family and community history with a razor-sharp memory for details long forgotten by others. Oscar was fortunate to retain his wit and memory through to the very end. Travelling was also important to him and with Winkie they travelled many roads and miles England, France, Hawaii, US, and Canada were among their adventures. He leaves with us his legacy of family commitment, love for the land, his keen sense of humour and true love for life. Although we will miss his presence dearly, we are comforted by the fact that he had a full happy life and is at peace. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, Langruth or to the Lakeland Cemetery. Funeral Service was held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Langruth with Rev. Phyllis Thordarson officiating. Interment followed at the Lakeland Cemetery. I had the privilege of spending so much time at Oscar and Winkes as a teenager with Denise. I have wonderful memories of that time and so sad to hear of Oscar's passing. When we were going out for the evening we would always go into the living room for our instructions on safety from him! So lucky to grow up in such a caring circle of fine folks. I always loved his smile and enjoyed his good taste in Buicks! Love and prayers to all the family - Posted by: Maureen McKinnon Boyce (Friend of Denise and the family) on: Jan 24, 2015
