GEORGE ARTHUR CLAVELLE It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather George Clavelle on January 20 at the age of 82; beloved husband of Betty Anne Ludtke of Cheyenne, Wyoming. George will be missed by his loving children; Grant (Joyce) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Larry (RoAnn) of Calgary, Alberta, Maureen (Barry) of Winnipeg, Doug (Leo) of Vancouver, British Columbia and Karen (Jim) of Winnipeg, grandchildren, Christian and Justin, Jason and Krista, Ravyn and Paris and great-grandchild, Kayla. Dad was a pillar of strength and a vibrant, talented man. Everything he did led him to become a man worthy of the utmost admiration and respect. George was born on June 29, 1932 in Whitewood, Saskatchewan. At the young age of 20, George became a member of the St. Boniface Police Department and was married shortly after to Margaret Light. Together they raised a family of five children. George would continue his career for 35 years (1952-1988), retiring as a Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police/Staff Inspector from the Winnipeg Police Service. George loved wildlife and the outdoors and worked tirelessly in conservation as the President of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation (1967-1969) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation (1977-1979). George and his committee of five formed the Canadian Wildlife Foundation. On retirement, George was also involved with the Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters Association and the Mid-Canada Marine Dealers Association, where he published a hunting, fishing and boating magazine for Western Canada. He also formed and became president of Aurora Borealis Co. Ltd. and Northern Consulting specializing in promoting tourism to Canadian fishing and hunting lodges. His interests allowed him to travel extensively to many countries including China, Australia and Japan. George also gave of himself to the community through acts of volunteerism. He was a member of the following clubs; Knights of Columbus, Richelieu Club, Laverendrye Game & Fish Association, the Junior Rifle Program, Manitoba Peace Officers Club, Salvation Army, Manitoba Habitat Trust, Fort White Nature Center and the Wood Bison Re-Establishment Foundation. Throughout his life George received many prestigious awards for his efforts. Especially significant are the Royal Canadian Humane Society Award (1969), The Queen's Jubilee Medal (1977), the Chancellory of Canadian Orders and Decorations Exemplary Service Medal (1985), the Confederation of Canada Medal (1992) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012). He always spent summers at the lake (Gull Lake, Bissett and Falcon Lake) with his family and friends. George loved to socialize and entertain. His dinner parties and late night card tricks were legendary. We will fondly remember the many boating, fishing and water skiing adventures. Everyone was always welcome to enjoy summer getaways. George re-married in 1999 to Betty. They split their time between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Gold Canyon, Arizona. Cremation has taken place and a service will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. A service of remembrance will be held in Winnipeg at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in George's memory to: The Canadian Wildlife Federation 350 Michael Cowpland Drive Kanata, Ontario K2M 2W1.

  • A sad goodbye to Uncle George, a goodhearted man like his brother Benjamin, my father. We have but good souvenirs of the short times we spent with him, may he rest in peace, he will always be in our hearts. - Posted by: Denis Clavelle (nephew) on: Feb 03, 2015

  • Unfortunately, I didn't had many chances to meet uncle Georges veru often, living in QC province since my Dad (Georges's brother)moved there while time ago. On the other hand, I've always heard all the good things around my uncle's accomplishments. I met him a few times in my life, just enough to be impressed by his strong attractive personality and with the good humour he had. I wll always remember his last visit to QC when we had dinner with him at home, and he kept doing his magic tricks with playing cards. Rest in peace now Georges, and say hello to my Dad Benjamin up there where you're now all reunited together Clavelle brothers & sisters.

  • Met George at the newly built police station and court house in St. Boniface where over the years we became friends. Always professional in his manners and duties, with a great sense of humour and smile. Sadly we lost touch with each other after we each transferred out of St. Boniface in the late seventies. RIP George, with our condolences to your family members. - Posted by: Bob Giasson (Co-worker) on: Jan 26, 2015

  • George was my first Sergeant and on my first shift, May 16,1966, he came out and patrolled with me. I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a policeman but when I went on patrol for the first time, I wondered to myself if I had made a horrible mistake. Sgt. Clavelle was a master of the pep talk and that's exactly what he gave me that day. He inspired in me a confidence that lasted throughout my career and I never looked back. Thanks George! • Met George upon amalgamation of city winnipeg. He was a great supervisor and a friend to all. He invited us to use his cottage in Bisset numerous times for our moose hunting trips, he even joined us on a few of them. He will be missed, rest in peace - Posted by: Norm Sparrow (Friend and co worker) on: Jan 25, 2015

  • George Clavelle was a brilliant manager of organizations and understood the personalities of people. He was also a man who could associate respectfully with all strata of society. He had dignity and was charming. My wife, Mary looked forward to having a dance or two with George at various police socials we attended. Mary would say he was a master of the polka, and her having Ukrainian/Romanian background made her a 'hard marker' when it came to the polka. He was also 'good police' and was able to deal with problems effectively and logically. Senior officers would often confer with him on their matters of concern. George Clavelle was the epitome of an Officer and a Gentleman. - Posted by: R. G. (Dick) Hickling (Colleague - Winnipeg Police ( 1960 to 1987 )) on: Jan 24, 2015
