NORMAN FREDERICK JOHNSON
Date of Passing: Jan 20, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN FREDERICK JOHNSON July 25, 1939 - January 20, 2015 ELSKU NORMAN, GODA NOTT It is with deepest regret that the family announces the passing of their dearly beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to us all, Norman Frederick Johnson. Peacefully with family by his side at 10:17 p.m. on January 20th he lost his battle with cancer. Norman leaves to mourn his wife of 48 years, Carol Johnson (nee Erickson). Also survived by sons Ryan and Rodney (Panayota), siblings Len (Joyce), LeRoy, Margaret, Allen (Valerie), and Elaine Cyr (Denis), mother-in-law Vala Erickson, sister-in-law Donna Erickson, and several wonderful nieces and nephews. Also grieving are two special boys, Bradyn and Daunte, who had adopted him as their "Afi Norman" alongside their own grandfather and very good friend to Norman, Freeman Fjeldsted (Lily). Predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Tavia Johnson, his father-in-law Hallgrimur Erickson, sister-in-law Karen Johnson, and brother-in-law John Erickson. Born July 25th, 1939 at Lundar, Manitoba, where he attended Lundar School, and where in his youth he worked at various farms during the summer. Norman also spent a year attending school and working on a farm at Cypress River. As a young adult he worked various jobs at Manitoba Hydro, Inco Mines in Thompson, as well as the Johnson General Store in Lundar before acquiring his Journeyman's in Air Conditioning and Refridgeration from Red River Community College. He then worked at CIMCO for seven years in the trade, after which he went on to teach that same trade at Kildonan East Collegiate for 25 years. While teaching he attended the University of Manitoba in the evenings and during the summer to receive his B. Ed. While beyond his vocational and academic accreditation he became more than just another instructor to many of his students, following their careers diligently, and developing a rapport with them. He was also involved in coaching and managing various sports teams at the high school as well as his local community clubs. Many came to know Norman as not only a jack of all trades but a master of them as well. He could repair and construct nearly anything. He took pride in his work and the ability to help others. Norman married Carol in 1966 and raised their two boys in the Crestview area of St. James Assiniboia. In 1994 they purchased a cottage near the east shore of Lake Winnipeg at Hillside Beach. Many of our fondest memories with Norman were had there, snowmobiling in the winter, playing horseshoes and bocce ball in the summer, and cards for any season. He will be sorely missed and his smile, laugh, and jocular quips remembered and reminisced over, long into the future. Memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Thursday January 29 at 2:00pm. 4000 Portage ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba. Private family interment to be held in Lundar, Manitoba at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Wpg. MB R3J 2H7, or to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Wpg. I just read of Mr. J’s (Norm’s) passing. I was was a student with Mr. Johnson graduating in 1980. Mr. J was an outstanding mentor. He made arrangements for my first job at Fleming Pedlar. He truly was an influence on my life as well as many others that were mentored by him. My deepest condolences to his family, his students and anyone that had the pleasure of him touching their life. Sorry it’s so late Norm, but Godspeed the world will miss your kids nd. - Posted by: Lorne ozuk (Student) on: Feb 07, 2025

Was looking for classmates of 1986 when I came across Mr J's obituary. That's what we all called him. Hand's down one of my favorite teacher's ever. Still remember his teachings as I trouble shoot a/c equipment. Lots of good advice and life skills learned in his class beyond just refrigeration. Best wishes to his friends and family. - Posted by: Mark Heglin (Student ) on: Jan 07, 2025

I am so sorry to just hear of Norm's passing! Norm was a favourite teacher of mine and he cared about each and every one of us. We met a few years after graduation and went for dinner together and certainly had a few laughs talking about life. Mr Johnson you're a great man! Until we meet again my friend. - Posted by: J Dart (Student/friends ) on: Oct 09, 2019

Dear Carol, Rodney & Ryan, So sorry to hear of Norman's passing. I thought for sure that he would be stubborn enough to have beaten it. I valued him as a client, but more importantly I valued him as a friend. I always enjoyed being in his presence! His laugh was infectious and his constant joking is how I will remember him. He was a gentleman who will be missed. - Posted by: Geoff Nanton (Friend and client) on: Jan 28, 2015
