MARGUERITE ELIN FINNBOGASON (nee OLSON) 1921 - 2015 Marguerite passed away peacefully on January 29 with family at her side. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Alan, daughter Eve and husband James Fitzgerald, daughter-in-law Hanna, sister-in-law Elaine, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters and her son, Charles. Marguerite was born in Winnipeg on August 22, 1921. She grew up on Parkview Street and attended Assiniboine School, Linwood Collegiate and Dominion Business College. She met Alan at the Canoe Club when he returned home from overseas after the war and they were married in 1949. Alan adored her and cared for her for the rest of her life. She worked for Dominion Bridge before taking time off to raise her two children. She was proud of their accomplishments and had many sleepless nights while they were in university typing papers that were due the next morning. She was delighted to go back to work at age 58 at the University of Manitoba Department of Medical Microbiology and very much enjoyed the new challenge as well as the friends she made there. Marguerite and Alan enjoyed travelling and she often accompanied him on business trips. They loved their winter vacations, especially those in Grand Cayman in the early years. In retirement they went on a number of cruises and travelled to Europe and throughout Canada and the United States. She and Alan had many pleasant summers at their cottage at Gimli where she swam daily from Victoria Day until late September, going in the water regardless of the weather. Marguerite was a creative person who liked to sew, knit and paint. She was always impeccably dressed and loved to shop. A favorite regular outing was lunch with her good friend, Joy Kent, followed by shopping til they dropped'. She also maintained a close lifelong connection with her childhood friend, May Cannell Dick Anderson. As young women they were notorious for riding the streetcar to work together every day and laughing all the way downtown. When Alan went to live at Golden West Centennial Lodge in 2009 Marguerite continued to live in their house for another two years but went to join him in 2011. They had adjoining rooms and shared a table for two in the dining room right until her passing. She often said that they had lived through the worst of times with the Depression and the War, and then the best of times after that. Thanks to the staff at Golden West and especially to nurse Trina Camire for her compassionate care right up to the end. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has already taken place. Notice of a memorial service will follow at a later date. If friends wish, donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 9Z9.
