JOHANNES GEHRER Johannes Gehrer passed away suddenly on January 27, 2015, in La Manzanilla, MX at the age of 83. He will be deeply missed by his children Hansi (Angelika), Ursi, Uli (Cheryl), and Harold (Claudia). Opa will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Christiana, Steven, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Robin, Alex and Kira. He was predeceased by his parents, Johannes and Marta Gehrer and his sister Martha Heim. Johannes was born in Faurndau, Germany on December 31, 1931 and was raised on a farm along with his sister. He graduated from the University of Nuertingen, Germany in 1962 with an agricultural diploma. His thirst for knowledge was lifelong and when he was not working he read avidly, in the last year graduating to a tablet to surf the internet. Upon completing university he enjoyed a few years travelling around Europe in between the busy seasons of farming. He was also a member of the Faurndau volunteer fire department. In 1964 he married Ingeborg Gruen and started a family near her home village of Weldingsfelden. With a passion for farming and a love of the land he relocated his young family to the Landmark area of Manitoba in 1979. Upon arrival in the land of "beautiful sunsets, wide open spaces and the blue Manitoba skies" he quickly had to adapt to the realities of prairie agriculture. The challenges of harsh weather, spring flooding, and different farming methods led to a quick learning curve and a new outlook. Along with the difficulties presented in learning to farm in a new land he also developed a love of Manitoba's landscape, spending time boating and water skiing as well as hunting. On his 70th birthday he skied his last, on the big water of the Bay of La Manzanilla. In his semi-retirement, time was split between the family farm and his winter home on a property he purchased in Mexico. He spent the last 16 winters in La Manzanilla where he will be laid to rest. Honouring Johannes's wishes the service will be held in La Manzanilla, Mexico.

  • Johannes Gehrer and I met in 1980 and became friends for life after a pork chop, Spaetzle and a few beers. He was a veritable homo universalis, who was equally at home on a a tractor as in Goethe's Faust. Our range of conversation took us from the dawn of Creation to a Prairie Sunset. Hans, as called by his friends, was an astute mind, moral, ethical and the essence of decency. Like Swabians mostly are, he was frugal but not cheap. He loved farming and nature and was home in the world of ideas. To that end he developed a commensurate vocabulary which he honed daily. In 1997 we set out in his camper and traveled 8,000 miles through the Baja and then down the Mexican Coast to Manzanilla where we cast about. He immediately recognized this to be his home away from home and he chose well. It was as if his cottage by the ocean was waiting for him to live happily there for seventeen years and then go home to sit with his Maker, who was happily waiting for him after a final swim. Ruhe sanft, mein guter Kamerad, und Auf Wiedersehen! - Posted by: Dr. Jack Thiessen (close friend, neighbour, fellow-traveler, conversationalist) on: Jan 31, 2015
