Pretty shocked right now. Jim and I were very close buddies as far back as junior high. We lost track of each other over time but, in recent years, we reconnected on Facebook and did so in a very wholehearted & genuine way. Growing concerned that Jim hadn't responded to several recent messages I sent his way, I started googling to see if I could find his phone number. I found this obituary instead. My heartfelt sympathies to his brothers & extended family. Jim (I have trouble adapting to "JR") was a good man at heart, and one of the most imaginative people I've ever met. Whatever else he was in this life, he was uniquely himself. I will miss him and always regret that we didn't have occasion to meet in person in our recent past. - Posted by: Rob McInnes (Friend) on: Apr 29, 2015

I would like to thank everyone for your meaningful and heartfelt messages that I, Bruce and John have received both here and through the mail. I hope you will be able to come to Jim's service on May 2 so we can personally thank you and we can share stories about JR one last time. It saddens me very much to hear that JR is no longer with us and has unfortunately prematurely passed on. We go back a long way. It was our mutual interest in listening to short wave radio broadcasts that first brought us together in the middle 1970's when we were both students at the u of Manitoba. I found him not only to be a good friend as a fellow hobbyist, but also as a good friend in life. He was fun to be with and his clear thinking and insights about life and people in general, have guided me to this very day. I enjoyed going to radio conventions in Thunder Bay, Minneapolis, and Lincoln, Nebraska together with him and Barry, Dave and Bill. But what I will remember the most will be the many canoe and back packing trips we all took together. It was on these trips that I found a liking for nature and wildlife as they are truly meant to be seen, in the wild. The haunting call of the loon on that lonely lake as well as the cheerful call of the song sparrow at breakfast time will always remind me of the happy times which we all enjoyed. I also recall JR.'s enjoyment of English literature when I close in saying to him, wherever he is: as William Shakespeare wrote: "Good night prince and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest". - Posted by: Garry Sapoznikow (friend) on: Mar 28, 2015

Jim (JR) and I served together in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and became good friends. Later when I commanded the Camerons Jim was my Quartermaster. He was proud of his association and faithfully participated in all activities and exercises. He enjoyed being known as the "Q" and could always be counted on. He placed the soldiers' needs first and many Camerons will remember him for having anticipated that they might need extra bits of equipment in the field. He was equally proud of his service to Manitoba via MPIC. Later he used his carving skills to share his considerable skills with others. Jill, my wife Mary Ann and I extend our sincerest condolences to you on Jim's passing. Thank you for bringing him back to Winnipeg so that his friends and his Regiment can participate in his service. God Bless. RIP "Q" your duty is done! - Posted by: J. A. Kenneth McCuaig (Friend and fellow Cameron) on: Mar 06, 2015

A fellow hobbyist Jim was just about the most enthusiastic hobbyist I ever came across with a genuine thirst to help, teach & pass on the skills & knowledge he had attained over the years. A genuine loss to all he touched in life far & wide. Condolences to the Roberts Clan. - Posted by: Matt McGrath (Fellowship Of Scale Modelling) on: Feb 17, 2015

Never met in person this good man, but I knew him from modeling page. Once he sent me a really heartwarming message about my diorama. He said it really touched him. I was so proud. Shame I knew him only like that. My condolences to the family and friends. RIP [*] - Posted by: Jakub Oles () on: Feb 16, 2015

I knew him through online scale modeling groups, and he was always a gentleman with an obvious sense of enjoyment not only for the hobby but for sharing it with others. He will be truly missed. - Posted by: Mike Still (scquaintance) on: Feb 16, 2015

Only knew JR through our conversations on the tank modellers forums. But seems we had a lot in common, from our hobbies to the folks we knew here in Winnipeg. Enjoyed our gab sessions, he will be missed. - Posted by: Jim Hazell () on: Feb 14, 2015

JR was a colleague, mentor and most of all a friend. We chatted a lot, almost everyday sharing knowledge and ideas about our common passion- modelling. He was a teacher, sharing his experiences not only in modelling, soldiery, and life itself. I will surely miss my friend, my buddy. Rest easy JR, perhaps we'll have the chance for our other plans some other time in some other place. Send my regards to Uncle Stan. ;) - Posted by: Jess Santos (Friend) on: Feb 14, 2015

JR was a good friend & carving buddy. It's a sad day to learn of his passing. He was always there to lend his support & wisdom, as well as a lot of caustic banter & criticism when warranted. He had a big heart for all his feline friends. Now he can keep company with Bud, Oskie & the many others. - Posted by: Doug Danell (friend, student & fellow carver.) on: Feb 14, 2015
