OLIVER JOSEPH LANDRY Peacefully, on January 20, 2015, at the Post Inn Village in Oakville, Ontario, Oliver Joseph Landry, after an lengthy descent into dementia, at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) (d. May 1985). Very dear father to Geraldine Sobie (Joseph) of Oakville, and Connie Janik (d. August 2002). Lovingly remembered as the "Best Grampa Ever" by Michael Sobie of Aurora, ON, Paul Sobie of Rockwood, ON, Joanna Fonseca (David) of Orillia, ON and Karen Sobie Hilbert (Jim) of Newport Beach, CA. Hannah Sobie and Matthew Fonseca were so fortunate to have had a wonderful Great-Grampa in their lives. Oliver, affectionately known as "Shorty", was born in 1922 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He was a proud volunteer serving in the United Kingdom, France and Germany during the Second World War. Back in Canada, he found work in Northern Ontario and Churchill, Manitoba. Upon his return to Winnipeg, he met Betty and they married in November 1956. Oliver was a train engineer for the Greater Winnipeg Water District and drove buses for Winnipeg Transit until his retirement in 1986. Oliver was a very active retiree and enjoyed bowling and curling with his buddies. He was especially proud of his perfect eight-ender in March 1992. He was also a terrific card player, counting Cribbage and Poker as his favourites. Oliver was an active member of the Elks, the Legion, and the Army and Navy. He never passed up an opportunity to help out others either by donating his time or his money. The family has many fond memories of travels with Grampa to Florida, British Columbia, Turks and Caicos and Botswana and South Africa. He loved to watch the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and held season tickets for the Manitoba Goldeyes. Oliver moved to Port Credit, Ontario in 2008 to be closer to his family. His family would like to thank his friend, Darshani, and all of the wonderful staff on Linden at the Post Inn Village, especially Raymond, Sandra, Prisca, Terasina and Comfort for the care and compassion they shared over the past four years. Oliver has been cremated and an interment will be held at the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg in the spring. A private family memorial has taken place. Oliver will be remembered as one of the kindest, most generous souls we have ever known.
