NELLIE ELLCHUK It is with great sadness that the Kawa family announces the passing of Nellie Ellchuk (nee Swinarchuk) at the age of 90, at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. She spent her last days surrounded by her loving family before she went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Saviour, on February 1, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Ellchuk, son David Ellchuk, daughter Sandra Kawa, and sisters Annie Domaschuk, Ruby Backlin, Jean Ramgren and Margaret Weitzel. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Katie Shistowski; son-in-law Dennis Kawa, grandchildren: Tara Reimer (Darcy), Tammy Neufeld (Greg), Keith Kawa (Julie), Julianne Curran (Mark), and great-grandchildren: Bronwyn, Jackson, Hannah, Cole, Josh, Elizabeth, James, Caroline, and Kate; daughter-in-law Darlene Ellchuk, Tanya Ellchuk, Tasha Ellchuk (Mike). Nellie was born in Ostrog, Poland and immigrated with her family to Elphinstone, MB in 1929, where she lived happily on the family farmstead for the next 80 years, before moving to Winnipeg. She was a fun-loving, hard-working, kind and compassionate person. She enjoyed entertaining, was a fantastic cook and most of all, she loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Great-Granny, you will always be fondly remembered. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 at Rae's Funeral Home in Shoal Lake, MB. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Wonderful memories of the whole family together when they came down for my sister Jeanne's wedding. Auntie Nellie and uncle Pete were like my family that lived next door, never felt like we were miles apart (Thunder Bay - Sandy Lake). Always a wonderful warm welcome when the Ellchooks and Ellchuks were together sitting around auntie Nellie's kitchen table drinking (Or) and eating all that wonderful Ukrainian food and talking to uncle Pete about farming. The last fond memories at uncle Pete's funeral. Till we all meet again my western family. - Posted by: Dennis Ellchook (2nd cousin to uncle Pete) on: Mar 19, 2015

  • What a wonderful soul! My favorite Auntie hands down. I have fond memories of her and Uncle Pete visiting my parents' home in Sandy Lake, Manitoba. Friday nights with cigarettes, rum and cokes, kielbasa, cheese and crackers and lots and lots of laughter. Side splitting laughter no less. No wonder she lived such a long and beautiful life. The thing I remember most about her of course was her cooking (Especially the head cheese). Hers was the best. My mother always said so too. She would give me a couple of jars whenever I visited the farm. Actually, anything that came from her kitchen was perfect. She was so proud of her grandchildren and Sandra and Dennis. Will miss her very, very much. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memory. I just know she is having a ball in heaven with all the other Saints and Angels and Uncle Peter and Sandra and David. Can't wait to see you again Auntie Nellie!!! Have a couple of jars of head cheese ready for me. Condolences to Dennis and the rest of the Kawa family. - Posted by: Ilya Koltusky (Godson, Nephew) on: Mar 15, 2015

  • It was always a welcome, come in, and a beautiful smile that greeted you, yes, good treats for the kids, but that smile, her coffee, enjoying her cigarette will be in my memory bank, may she rest in peace with her family; Do not let your hearts be trouble Trust in God, trust in me. In my father's house are many rooms, if not so I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you; John 14:1-2 - Posted by: Kenneth (nephew) on: Feb 15, 2015
