SHANE GARRY JOHNSTON
Date of Passing: Feb 10, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHANE GARRY JOHNSTON At 10 pounds, 1 ounce, Shane came into the world loud and large, and that is how he lived each of his 48 years. Shane was an incredibly loving, caring, and generous man. He never missed a gathering of family or friends, and he loved to hear a good story almost as much as he liked to tell one. When someone was ill, he was the first one at their side, doing everything he could to help them through. An avid fastball player and sports fan, Shane enjoyed nothing more than the weekend tournament with the boys, both on the field and off. The Royals and the Crestview Men's Fastball League will never be the same. Many of Shane's favourite memories came from the two winters he spent pitching in New Zealand. There he met his very good friend, Matt Baldwin. At Matt's wedding later this year, he is reserving a seat beside himself for Shane, his best man. Shane approached everything in his life with passion and gusto and, for that reason he never worked a day in his life. As co-owner of Dollar Wise Quality Cleaners for the past 17 years, and more recently Zev Apparel, Shane's staff and business associates became his friends, particularly the members of the Winnipeg Business Club. Most special to Shane was his very dear friend and business partner, Paul Walsh. Although never a quitter, Shane was unable to win his second battle with cancer, and succumbed peacefully in St. Boniface Hospital on February 10, 2015, with family at his side. Audrey, Garry and Sherrie extend warm and sincere thanks to Brenda Dawyduk for the exceptional personal care she provided to Shane during his final days, and to Brock Adams for taking care of Shane's beloved dogs, Larry, Willow and Jackson, while he was in hospital. Shane's life was filled with great people. While there are too many to mention here, we must acknowledge his little friend Madison McFadzean, who brought so much happiness to his life. Shane held on tight to one of her favourite toys during his last hours. As Shane wished, cremation has taken place with no formal funeral service. A Celebration of Shane's Life will take place on Sunday, February 22 at Triple B's on Scurfield, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Would it ever be too late to say something.. hearing of Shane's passing, and knowing of his previous, successful battle with cancer; so many of us will miss this shining light. The happy, loud, joyous little brother who attended all of his sister's baseball games, the beaming, encouraging, wonderful, energetic classmate, businessman and friend. You are missed and remembered. - Posted by: Paul Buchanan (friend) on: May 27, 2015

To Garry, Audrey, Sherry and family. Just found out the sad news about Shane today. So sorry for your loss. My daughter, Molly, thought the world of Shane, as did I,and she wrote about Shane and his dry cleaning business for a school project. She also loved to come to work with me at the Walsh office and loved to visit with Shane and especially with "Larry, Willow and Jackson". Will miss him dearly. Love you...R.I.P. my friend. - Posted by: Cindy Schultz (Friend and co-worker) on: Feb 27, 2015

Condolences to the Johnston family in your loss of Shane. It was a privilege to have had Shane play ball for me and the Winnipeg Imperials fastball team. On a personal note, the fact that he made the effort and attended my 80th birthday party about a year ago meant a great deal to me and my family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Al Mayer (Coach Winnipeg Imperials) on: Feb 25, 2015

I am so sorry to hear of Shane's untimely demise. Just a couple of weeks ago Shane made it into my conversation as my co-worker and I were reminiscing about childhood times. Shane was someone who would bring life into a room with such ease and his laugh was so robust that upon hearing it you could not help but join him. Shane my friend RIP. We looked up to Shane. He did community work, and was an involved guy. We are heartbroken for Shane's family and friends learning of his loss just minutes ago. He will be sadly missed by his "sign guys" because Shane made friendships, not acquaintances. So very sad to hear this news. - Posted by: Rick Wagner (Supplier) on: Feb 20, 2015

Gary, Audrey and Sherrie, When our family moved back to Winnipeg from a year overseas I was dropped in to a new school St. Avila. (circa 1973) I knew no one in the Grade 1 class. To this day, I will remember the first person that greeted me and showed me around the class, telling me how all the cool kids are in Miss Leckner's class... and that this was the place to be -- yes that was Shane. I remember an animated fun loving kid that was friendly with the 'new kid'! I was classmates with Shane over the years at St. Avila, Acadia and FRC. I remember how great a teammate he was on our baseball team, serious in play... but loved to have a laugh any time. I admired his tenacity at pitching and recall the dozens of times he struck out the opposing players to help win the game (we won Provincials that year I believe). As we all get older we lose touch with the kids we grow up with, but we hold memories of those that made a difference. Shane certainly did. I will remember him as a fun loving, kind person, loved to laugh and joke around, always smiling and social with everyone. Sincere condolences for your -- and our- loss. We are so very sad to hear of Shane Johnston's passing. He brought Dollarwise on board with the Cuddles 4 Kids program right from the start - without hesitation. Any conversation with him usually ended in, "Just let us know what we can do to help you out. We love what you are doing and we love being a part of it." We are honoured to have crossed paths with such a generous and kind man. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and the Dollarwise team. - Posted by: Alex & Madison Vanderhooft () on: Feb 18, 2015

Shane had a smile and laugh as big as he was. I can remember going to the park hearing this huge sound coming from the mound and I could tell you without even looking it was Shaner on the mound. His battle with cancer is evidence of Shane on a daily basis, a battler. My family's thoughts are with Gary, Audrey and Sherrie at this time. - Posted by: Greg and Annette Bouchard (Friend of the Johnston's) on: Feb 18, 2015

"J" Mrs J and Sherries, I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your son and brother Shane. I know the sadness that you are going through as cancer took my brother Mark way too young as well. Garry, Audrey, Sherrie, I saw Shane briefly only a couple of times over the last few years, one of which was at my Dad's funeral 7 years ago. We were neighbours on Patricia Avenue throughout his childhood and I babysat him many times. He was an adorable little blonde bombshell! Sorry I cannot attend the memorial as I am currently out of the country. Be strong, be proud of him, and smile when you think of the MANY who will also be missing him. I can honestly say I am a better person having known Shane. I have had the opportunity to play with Shane for many years on the Westwood Royals and I can tell you it wasn't the wins and loses I remember but rather the great times shared on and off the field making fun of each other. RIP friend! - Posted by: Al Whalen (Friend & Teammate) on: Feb 17, 2015

When Shane entered a room - you knew he arrived. He would navigate thru the room and make sure he knew everyones name, and the relationship of that person to the event in the room. He was funny, boisterous, reliable and compassionate. Shane was a friend that everyone wished they had and if you considered Shane your friend you have been honored with memories that most people never come across in their lifetime. Shane will be missed immensely, but how he imprinted all of us with his laughter we will have forever. Until we meet again..... - Posted by: Deb Slobogian-Jones (family) on: Feb 17, 2015

Sherrie, our hearts & prayers go out to you and your family during this difficult time. Yes, Shane was an incredibly loving, caring, generous man and oh so much more. He was a true Angel on Earth! He loved little Miss Madison with all his heart and she loved him just as much. She will miss her fun filled weekends with him and his doggies.
