LEONA THERESA MICHALKOW There is a new star in the heavens, Leona Theresa Michalkow passed away in her sleep on February 13, 2015, at the age of 85, at the Cardston Hospital. Leona was born in Hyas, Saskatchewan November 2, 1929 to Joe and Mary Radwanski. She met the love of her life, Joe Mickalkow on Valentine's Day in 1947 and married June 3 that same year. She had her first daughter Cynthia a year later and Gail three years after that. They lived in Winnipeg for most of their lives, until in 2004 when Cynthia moved them to Cardston to take care of them. Leona had two precious dogs later in life that she doted on and loved, Lola who she is now in Heaven with, and Penny who will miss her dearly. Leona had two daughters she loved so much, Cynthia (Don) Melanson and Gail Michalkow. Leona had four grandchildren: Joe Melanson (Lisa) and great-granddaughter Ashlea; Terra Melanson (Doug Morland); Aleshia Melanson and her dogs; Melissa Philp (Roger) and great-grandson Owen. Leona has one living brother Larry Radwanski (Pat), and brother-in-law Alec Goretski. She was predeceased by her love Joe, her sister Lena and brother Mike. Leona had many beloved friends who were like family and loved her very much. Leona always had a smile on her face for her workers at Lee Crest as they all grew to know and care about her. Leona suffered a lot the last few months of her life but she never gave up and fought so hard. Up until the last few days she was still laughing and making jokes. Her daughters and granddaughters spent weeks by her bedside holding her hand and caring for her until her last breath. She was much loved and will be sadly missed. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Cardston Legion Branch 170, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Friends may meet the family at the Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston, AB on Wednesday, February 18 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Cardston, AB on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Angelo D'Costa officiating. • DEAR FAMILY, OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AT THIS TIME. I ALWAYS ENJOYED GETTING TOGETHER WITH YOUR MOM AND DAD AT TAX TIME. WE ENJOYED A LAUGH AND A JOKE. TAKE CARE. JAN (TAXLADY) - Posted by: JAN ROCHELLE (TAXLADY) on: Feb 26, 2015

  • I will miss this dear, sweet lady. Uncle Joe and Auntie Leona were like a second set of parents to me. They always made me feel welcome, accepted and loved, and allowed me to share in so many parts of their lives. Camping, cooking, just hanging out, wonderful times I will never forget. Auntie Leona was the last person to know me since day one. I miss the good times and look forward to more good times with Cynthia, Gail and their families. - Posted by: Terry Michalkow (nephew) on: Feb 19, 2015

  • Some of my fondest young memories were going to the Michalkow's for Ukrainian Christmas. Mrs. Michalkow made the best sour cabbage rolls ever to be tasted (what I wouldn't do for a huge plateful right now). There was always such a warm welcome walking into the house. You could always tell that Mr. and Mrs Michalkow cared very much for each other. I'm sure Mr. Michalkow was the first to greet her at the pearly gates. R.I.P Mrs. Michalkow you were a very nice lady here on earth and hope you reap the rewards you so deserve in heaven. Cyn, Gail and family, count your blessings you were so lucky to have her for this long. - Posted by: Roslyn Saurette (Grew up with Gail) on: Feb 17, 2015
