With broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Husband, Dad and Poppa. John passed away surrounded by his family at the age of 91 years.
Born in Birch River, Manitoba to parents Kost and Julia Zalitach, he was the sixth of seven children. John led a full life, starting out working in the bush cutting lumber then enlisting in the Army during the Second World War. In 1949 he married Jean (Gauk). They moved to Winnipeg and in 1952 he started his career with CPR, retiring in 1984. John also owned and operated Zalitach Limousine, servicing all Winnipeg Funeral Homes. After he sold the business in 1992, he started part time work at Cropo Funeral Chapel. He was employed there until 2013 when a stroke at the age of 89 caused his retirement. John was very involved with Blessed Virgin Mary Church. He served on several committees including Bingo, Perogies, Men's Club, Parish Council, Auditor, Wildlife, Sunday Collection and bus driver. He was a founding member of Sadochok (Ukrainian Nursery). Dad was a long time member of the C.U.A.C. Curling Club at West Kildonan and a member of Legion 141.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Jean, daughters Diane Zalitach and Wendy Groot (Jack), his precious grandchildren, Jennifer Pascoe, Jessica Fuga (Adam), Kevin and Michael Groot, sister-in-law Irene Dobush, and many dear nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his daughter Cyndi Pascoe, brothers, Steve, Bill, Nick, Mike, sisters Mary and Olga, brother-in-law Ed Dobush, nephew Sandy Zalitach, and most recently his great-nephew Daniel Shandroski and sister-in-law Judy Zalitach.
Rosary will be said on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. Funeral Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. in Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 965 Boyd Ave. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Virgin Mary Church Building Fund or St. Amant Foundation, 440 River Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2M 3Z9.
Thank you for the greatest gift you could have given us,
a family filled with love. We will love and miss you forever!

My deepest sympathy to all members of the Zalitach family. The last time I saw Mr Zalitach was at my father's funeral. We were so happy that he was the one who drove the hearse. It was comforting to all of us to see him there that day. Rest In Peace Mr Zalitach, thank you for all you have done for many of the North End families during their time of sorrow. You will always be a special gentleman to my family. - Posted by: Katherine Ewatski (School friend of Wendy/Jack) on: Feb 25, 2015

We are very sorry to hear about Uncle John's passing. May God's blessing be with you all during this difficult time. Uncle John was such a wonderful uncle, always smiling when I would see him. He would call me Jimmy, and always ask me how work was. Even in the hospital during his difficult time he would smile and ask how we we're doing. We will miss you Uncle John, Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Jamie & Wendy Zalitach & family (Nephew) on: Feb 23, 2015
