BETTY COATES October 16, 1937 - February 11, 2015 It is with great sadness we announce that after a brief, unexpected illness Elizabeth (Betty) Coates passed away on February 11, 2015 while on holiday in British Columbia. She was predeceased by her parents Annie and Andrew Henderson, her daughter Diane and son-in-law Joe Thordarson. She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 58 years, Alfred, and sister Iona Warner; children Deb (Rob) Smith, Dan (Eileen) Coates, and Don (Brenda) Coates; grandchildren Ben Thordarson, Amy Smith, Andrew (Jamie) Coates, Stacey (Scott) Torgerson, Iain Coates, Meaghan Coates; and great-grandchildren Chaise, Markus, and Annia. Betty was raised in Miami, Manitoba where she assisted her mother in the care of ladies at the Miami Maternity Hospital. After high school, she moved to Morris, Manitoba where she was employed as a telephone operator. It was here that she met the love of her life, Al. They married at a young age, then after a few years and four children, they purchased a farm at St. Anne, Manitoba where she lived until her passing. Betty was someone who always put others needs first. She was a kind and loving friend to many. Her greatest joy was in celebrating with her family. A memorial service will be held on February 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, Hwy. 1 East, Navin Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire a donation may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, or Winnipeg Humane Society.

  • Due to the Coates' influence that we became farmers. Susan and Betty curled together and worked at many elections. Always felt like good friends even when we hadn't seen each other in a while - especially when they were away at the business in Piney. Always appreciated her good sense of humor and ready laugh. It is a real shock to us, and our thoughts and prayers are with you Al and family. Betty will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Dave and Susan Reid (neighbours and friends for 37 years) on: Feb 21, 2015
