ELIZABETH (BETTY) FOX March 27, 1926 - February 6, 2015 Betty left us peacefully on February 6, 2015 at Youville Home in St. Albert, Alberta with her niece, Jan by her side. She will always be remembered by her loving family: her niece Jan (John); her beloved great-niece and nephew, Michael and Sarah; as well as many relatives in Northern Ireland. She will be missed by many friends in Winnipeg and St. Albert. Betty was born at home on March 27, 1926 in Scarva, County Down, Northern Ireland. She was the eldest daughter of John and Sarah Fox (nee McVeigh). The family immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Winnipeg. Betty attended St. Anne's Parochial School and St. Mary's Academy. After high school she challenged the Public Service Entrance Exam and achieved the highest score of her cohort. She then joined the federal Public Service and began an illustrious 48 year career with the Department of Veterans Affairs at Deer Lodge Hospital where she began in the X-Ray Department and later was promoted to Executive Assistant to the Hospital Administrator. Betty was predeceased by her parents, John and Sarah; her sister and best friend, Kathleen; and her beloved brother, Pat. Betty was well liked by all who crossed her path. She was best known for her quick wit, love of current affairs and terrific sense of humour. She was a woman of very strong faith. She loved to spend time with her niece and family and especially took pride in the many accomplishments of her great-niece and nephew. Following the death of her dear sister, she acquired a new and very special family member - Sam the cat. Anyone who knew Betty knows that Sam was a special light in her life. They gave each other great joy. Betty and Sam spent the last one and half years of her life in St. Albert surrounded by her loving family. We will always treasure this special time we shared. We are grateful that Sam continues to bring us joy. While in St. Albert she reconnected with many friends she had met during her frequent visits to be with family. She loved her visits to the Farmers Market and the Irish Pub. She travelled with us to Whitefish, Montana and loved it there. Mostly she loved her political debates with John and his home cooking! Betty was an avid gardener and over the years tended to many gardens including in St. Albert. She was a talented photographer and we are grateful for the beautiful pictures she has left for us. Betty loved to travel and she and her sister Kay shared many great trips in Canada but her favourite was their trip to Ireland where she spent time with family. Although this is a time of sadness, it is also a time to celebrate the life of a wonderful woman who touched our lives in such a special way. The family is especially grateful to the staff at Youville Home who ensured her last days were filled with love, spirituality and comfort. We also want to thank the many friends in St. Albert who brightened her days. Thanks also to Rita and Laurette for their amazing friendship and support. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John XXIII (Assiniboia Christian Centre), 3390 Portage Avenue, with Father Rev. Gerald Langevin officiating. If friends so desire donations may be made to the St. John XXIII Enhancement Fund, 3390 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3K 0Z3. • I have known Betty, her mom, and her sister since I was a small child, as we lived on the same street, and I had many wonerful visits with the family at their residence on Duffield. There was much laughter, jokes, sometimes tears, very fond memories I have. Betty worked many, many years with my father in the xray department at Deer Lodge. My sincere condolences to Betty's family, she was such a special lady. Even my children, when they were small, would ask their grandpa to take them down the street to visit Betty and Kay. Another special angel in Heaven. - Posted by: Judy (friend) on: Feb 21, 2015

  • I met Betty through her friend Rita where we spent several evenings together over tea and conversation. She was a friendly person and very fond of her cat. - Posted by: Nan Christie (friend from the apartment complex in Winnipeg) on: Feb 21, 2015
