Date of Passing: Feb 21, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRED LOUIE UNWIN Peacefully at home, with loved ones by his side, Fred departed this world on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Dad was predeceased by his wife Gerri and missed her very dearly since her loss in 2012. He leaves behind his children, Eric, Mona, Jennifer (Reg Harrington); sister Betty; grandchildren, Sarah, Paige and Arthur; as well as many other close and distant friends and family members. Fred was born in 1932, raised in St. Boniface, he attended King George Fifth School and began full time work in the lumberyard at the C.N.R. Fort Rouge Shop in 1949. He started his machinist apprenticeship in 1952 and stayed with CN until his retirement in 1988. Fred was extremely knowledgeable, an avid reader he enjoyed books on all subjects, history, philosophy, sociology, language, astronomy, poetry, geography and more. His nick name in many circles was "The Professor". In retirement Fred looked to his roots, fascinated with Norse culture and a search for understanding and interpretation of ancient Icelandic runes began. He was an astute gatherer and storer of information somewhat akin to a walking library, he always had many interesting facts to share. Fred loved imparting witty pertinent information just at the right time and telling often very funny little stories about his life's adventures from when he was a youth growing up in St. Boniface and Norwood in the 40's. Fred and Gerri both loved traveling south in the winter and he especially enjoyed his time spent in Cuba. Fred's Graveside Service was held in St. Vital City Cemetery on Friday, February 27, 2015.
