KATHLEEN (KAY) MACGREGOR 1917 - 2015 Passed away peacefully on February 21, 2015 at the age of 98. Kay was predeceased by her husband Alister, and daughter Elaine. She leaves to mourn daughter Anne and son John, as well as many MacGregor nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, the U.S. and Scotland, and her nephew David Morgan, his wife Deirdre and their children in Ireland. The family would like to thank Darlene Kaus for her consistent and sensitive support of Kay and her children over the past many years. One fateful evening in 1941, while attending a "social" with Canadian soldiers billeted in Aberaeron, Wales, Kay met Alister, the love of her life. Married in 1942, they began true married life in Edmonton after the war and then moved to Winnipeg during the 1950s. With three mentally disabled children, Al and Kay worked hard to ensure that there was support and acceptance in the community. A key component was the establishment of group homes, initially with paid staff and volunteer parent administrators. After much lobbying, they were able to convince the Minister of Health that professional administrators and more paid staff were required, which led to the founding of Winnserv with three homes during the 1970s. Today, Winnserv operates 18 group homes and cares for 73 residents. Kay and Alister made time and space in their hearts for many people, helping her relations in Wales financially and in many other ways. Kay also loved music. A talented pianist, she taught piano in Wales (where she is still recalled affectionately by at least one of her pupils) and Winnipeg, where she was also a member of her Welsh chapel choir. She continued to play until a few months ago, and sang right to the end. Always elegantly dressed, Kay was a sparky person, with definite views, an impish sense of humour, and a strong religious belief. Even as her memory failed her, she remained incredibly gracious and never complained about the challenges of old age. She will be missed. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr., Winnipeg. Instead of flowers, donations to Winnserv, 101 - 960 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 0R4 would be appreciated.

  • Annwyl Auntie Kathleen was a well respected member of an old Aberaeron family in Wales. There was one resident asking about her the other day and sadly I had to impart the news of her passing. I have fond memories of chauffeuring Kathleen and Aunty Nita for a shopping expedition when she last visited Aberaeron, what a good day we had. I also have many of her letters kept by my late brother David Jones. Many of her extended family still live in Wales and will remember her fondly. • The Macgregors were neighbors of my family on Pinewood dr. Kay taught many of the neighbor kids how to play piano including myself. When my own mother passed, she was the pianist at her service...wonderful neighbors...my thoughts, prayers and sympathies.
