GABRIEL GOUPIL Peacefully, on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Action Marguerite St. Vital, Gabriel Goupil passed away at the age of 89 years. Gabriel was larger than life; a lover of photography and French cuisine, he was charming and teased everyone he met. His joie de vivre brought many smiles to many people. Gabriel was predeceased by his beloved wife Jacqueline in 2010. He will be lovingly remembered by Evelyne Goupil (Rob), Dominique Esteves, and his grandchildren, Kylie (Cameron) and Paul. He was born in Denice, France and raised in Paris. His pioneering spirit took him to Northern Africa for employment where he built bridges over crocodile-infested waters. His next adventure brought him to Canada in 1955 on the Queen Mary where he met the love of his life, Jacqueline. Gabriel arrived in Canada with no money to his name and found work in Uranium City, Saskatchewan as a carpenter for Lorado Mines. Jacqueline joined him there and they married in 1957. Dominique was born in 1960 and when the mine closed in 1961, they moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where he started employment with INCO. Evelyne was born in 1963. They spent the next 22 years in Thompson where many lifelong friendships were formed. Their favorite place in the world was their cottage at Setting Lake that Gabriel and Jacqueline built from the ground up. They enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and watching gorgeous sunsets on the lake. After retirement, they moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their daughters. They enjoyed a wonderful retirement where they wintered in France, and summered at Setting Lake. In his later years, Gabriel was escorted all over the city for many lovely meals with his daughters and grandchildren. He spent five years at Residence Despins, and the last few months at Action Marguerite St. Vital. A celebration of Gabriel's life will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment will take place at a later date at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family would like to thank the exceptional staff at Residence Despins and Action Marguerite St. Vital. We could not have been on this journey without you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to your local Royal Canadian Legion or Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba. We were very sorry to hear of Gabe's passing. I (Maja) knew him as "Mr. Goupil", the charming & funny Dad (and raconteur extraordinaire) of my life-long friend Evelyne and my former babysitter Dominique. Gabe was a very dear friend to my parents and I, and I'll always remember the good times spent with him and Jacquie at Setting Lake and their beautiful cabin. We miss them both but we'll never forget them. Ev, Dom, Kylie and Paul--our deepest sympathy to you at this difficult time. - Posted by: Maja & Jamie Furlong (Neighbours and friends from Thompson, MB) on: Mar 10, 2015
