H.T. (JIM) BUTTS Peacefully, with his family by his side, Dad left this world on Friday February 27, 2015. Dad was born in Glace Bay, on Cape Breton Island on October 31, 1931. Tom, as his Ma called him, was the youngest of thirteen children. Dad left home at a young age and worked as a machinist. In 1949 Tom and his cousin Bink went to Halifax to join the Armed Forces, they were told that after they joined they would not be allowed to get a tattoo, so they went out and got tattoos first! In 1951, Jim, as he was then known by, met the love of his life, a young and beautiful woman named Myrtle. Jim and Myrtle married in October 1953 and together they raised five children, Murray, Sandra, Marion, Kathy and Billy. Over twenty-six years we were posted from Winnipeg, MB, to Turo, NS, to Gagetown, NB, to Germany, back to Winnipeg to Shilo, MB, and lastly Yorkton, SK. During Dad's military career, he served as a peace keeper in Cyprus and in Quebec during the FLQ crisis. Most of Dad's service was in the 3rd Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, a unit that his son Billy would later serve in as well. Dad ended his military career attached to the 64th Field Battery located in Yorkton, SK. In 1979 Dad and Mom retired to Oakbank, MB. Dad worked as a courier for Zipper Courier and lastly as a driver for Winnipeg Old Country Sausage. Dad loved the payday poker games, often winning, once coming home with a car! Dad loved to hunt and fish, with his buddies, most recently hunting in the Austin/MacGregor area at what they call "The Lodge". After a health scare last May, Dad and Mom sold their home in Oakbank and moved into a condo in Winnipeg, to be closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by his son Murray and his daughter Sandra. He is survived by his children, Marion, Kathy (Dwayne) and Bill (Christa), thirteen grandchildren, twelve great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. As Dad wished there will be no service, but a party to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Veterans Transition Network, 518- 470 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1V5 or at vtncanada.org. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one can ever fill. Thanks for being a perfect father! We will miss you!

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I was saddened to hear of Mr. Butts' passing. I was introduced to Mr. Butts in the 1970's on the Shilo Base through my dad, Preston Lennox MWO, RCHA,. We always looked forward to the weekend visits with Pearl, kids at home and the Butts family. Jim was always a great host and entertainer, he always brought smiles to visitors faces. We will miss him. Pat Lennox - Posted by: pat lennox (friends of the family) on: Mar 09, 2015

  • With deepest sympathy for your loss on behalf of the Captain General and All Ranks of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery - Posted by: Brigadier-General (Retired) J.J. Selbie ("Once a Gunner, Always a Gunner") on: Mar 09, 2015

  • I had the pleasure and, indeed, honour of serving with Jim in 3 RCHA. He was an outstanding soldier and the best Artillery Technician that I saw in many years in the Artillery. As a younger officer I had Jim as my OP Tech and learned many skills from him. His sense of humour was outstanding and he will be long remembered by all who served with him. Jim, "End Of Mission, Stand Easy". - Posted by: Major (Ret'd) Don Scott (Work) on: Mar 09, 2015

  • As a newly commissioned Officer in 3 RCHA circa 1971 the support of a good NCO was important - Sgt Butts took care of many new officers - and he took care of the senior ones as well...he was an example of all that was good within the ranks of the Gunners. He made the RCPO work in garrison and in the field - he was a soldier that is remembered with appreciation. - Posted by: Randall Stowell (Military Friend) on: Mar 08, 2015

  • Our condolences to all of the family. Jim, a dear husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many people. He will always be remember by us as a warm and caring loving man to all who knew him. His laughter and his jokes, clean or otherwise, he made us laugh. Every time we saw him he always had a smile on his face. I can honestly say, I cannot ever think of a time he didn't have a smile. Throughout his life, he has shown us, through his service to his country, to the love of his family, to his battle to the end, all his strength and courage. Now is his time to RIP. We will miss you Jim. - Posted by: Joan & Don Fedak ((Jim's grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, David, Jason's - Aunt & Uncle)) on: Mar 07, 2015
