Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDUARD SCHMIDT July 18, 1932 - March 11, 2015 With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Eduard Schmidt, in his 83rd year at Health Sciences Centre, in Winnipeg. Eduard is survived by his children, Edith (Walter) and Eric; his cherished granddaughter Cara; former wife Olga; nephews, Reinhard and Dieter and relatives - the Schulz, Schmidt, Piel and Lemke families. He was predeceased by his mother Emilie, brother Christian and sister Adele. Born in Sinakuvka, Poland, Eduard spent his adolescent years in Bad Harzburg, Germany, where he trained to become a carpenter and met a lifelong friend, Erich Darda. He immigrated to Canada in January 1953 to follow his dream of a better life. His strong work ethic and skill as a cabinet maker led to a successful career which included 20 years at Brown & Rutherford. Eduard was a friendly man who enjoyed daily walks, conversing with people in the neighbourhood, sharing stories and being involved in community activities. In earlier years, he would visit his good friend Martin Foerster, who often had fresh baking waiting. Some of Eduard's other interests included working on home projects and helping his friends with odd jobs. He loved discussing world politics, going out for a good meal and taking drives, which sometimes gave him an excuse to get ice cream. He was a man of faith who attended the German Evangelical Church on Winnipeg Avenue. Eduard cared deeply for his family, encouraging their educational / life pursuits and sharing wisdom and values from his life experience. In May 2010, Eduard suffered a serious stroke. Many prayers supported him in his successful rehabilitation and enabled him to move to ArlingtonHaus where he made many new friends. Heartfelt thanks from the family to the staff and homecare workers at ArlingtonHaus. The family appreciates the care given to Eduard by all staff at Health Sciences Centre. Visitation 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, March 16, 2015, as well as one hour prior to the funeral service. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, with Pastor Walter Schroedter officiating. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. I found it a joy to meet and know Eduard a little, when Salem church began a Bible study at Arlington Haus over 2 years ago. Eric, it was a delight to see you so faithful in visiting your dad and bringing into the Bible study group before you left for the evening. Eduard enjoyed the group and we will miss him. Praying God's peace and comfort will be your refuge as you miss him in this life. - Posted by: Linda Cormier (friend from Salem Church Bible study group) on: Mar 14, 2015
