JESSIE ISABELLA CARLSON (nee MacDONALD) Jessie died peacefully at Middlechurch Home on March 7, 2015. She is survived by her sister Carrie Rose of Toronto, her two sons Keith of Calgary and Ken of Winnipeg, three grand-children, Tamara Cyr of Halifax, Lee Carlson of Winnipeg and Donald Carlson of Calgary, and four great-grandchildren, Evan and Averie Carlson of Winnipeg and Samara and Michael Cyr of Halifax, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her sister Christina Mestdagh and her brothers George of Spokane and Neil of Albuquerque. Jessie was born at Portage la Prairie in 1922. She received her early education in the convent at St. Jean. She attended Normal School and taught briefly before her marriage. She was a stay-at-home mom and kept busy with homemaking and volunteer work. She was a Gilwell Scouter and was active in the Boy Scout movement while her boys were growing up. She also did a brief stint in the reserves before her regiment was disbanded. After an absence of man years, Jessie returned to teaching and resumed her studies. She was a graduate of both the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba and was employed by the Winnipeg School Division until her retirement at age 59. Following her retirement she continued to do volunteer work. She was active in the church and worked at the C.N.I.B. for many years. She enjoyed travelling, dancing, bridge, gambling and books. Her lifelong passion for reading was a real comfort in her declining years. Special thanks to the staff at Middlechurch Home D-100 for the care and attention in Mom's final year. Cremation has taken place and it was her wish that no memorial service be held.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I am surprised at learning of Aunt Jessie's death. I was just looking for an updated address as my Christmas card was returned. I'm sorry to hear of the passing of such an independent and strong-willed woman. We'll miss her dearly. - Posted by: Lorie Christian (Niece -- daughter of Neil MacDonald) on: Jan 04, 2016

  • Jessie Carlson was a brilliant teacher - I had her for history at Isaac Brock in the late 1970s. She was tough, but she also knew when to back off. For example, she always checked our homework, and typically disciplined when it wasn't done. I had one day where I simply hadn't had time to get mine finished (I invariably had mine completed). I was terrified as to what she was going to do to me. . . After inspecting my work, she leaned back, looked me straight in the eye, and said: "Halldor, that doesn't look like much work, but I'm going to presume that your typewriter condenses your writing." (Due to my disability, I used a typewriter instead of writing.) She then smirked, walked away, and never mentioned it again. I was SO impressed! - Posted by: Halldor Bjarnason (Student) on: Mar 20, 2015

  • Mrs. Carlson was my language arts teacher at Isaac Brock 40 years ago. Other than the red hair gone white, she appears to hardly have changed in this photo. I was equally fearful and admiring of her and worked harder in her class than any other so I could be rewarded with that hint of approval in her quiet smile. She was a wise, passionate and deeply committed educator and I'm very grateful that I had the benefit of her teachings in my formative years. Rest in peace Mrs. Carlson. - Posted by: Patricia Kuz (former student) on: Mar 17, 2015

  • Mrs Carlson was my social studies teacher at Isaac Brock. She always dressed like a lady and had matching purses for all of her outfits! She was strict and made us make maps which I have to admit I hated! I now see today why she had us make them! May she rest in peace - Posted by: Adiena Woods (former student ) on: Mar 17, 2015

  • She was one of the most beautiful and strongest women I knew! She will forever be a part of my life <3. I love you very much grandma! - Posted by: Tammy Cyr (grand-Daughter) on: Mar 17, 2015

  • Ms. Carlson was a lovely woman. Rest in peace. You were loved by many. - Posted by: Abby Carlson (An almost relative) on: Mar 17, 2015

  • Jessie was a wonderful, warm hearted person. She will be sadly missed by both family and friends. - Posted by: Barb Addis (Daughter-in-law) on: Mar 17, 2015

  • Mrs. Carlson was one of my teachers at Isaac Brock till 1980 when I graduated. The stories today that are told about her always brings a smile to whoever is telling the story and whoever is listening. Mrs. Carlson was always known as a STRICT teacher, but she was a teacher that knew how important eduacation was to her students and made sure she was going to teach it to us. She was a legend then and will always remain a Legend. - Posted by: Kerry Ann Batista (Student) on: Mar 17, 2015
