FLORENCE HAYES December 27, 1919 - March 13, 2015 In the early morning of March 13, 2015, Florence Hayes of Winnipeg passed away at the age of 95. She went peacefully in her sleep at the Grace Hospital, where many familiar faces from far and wide came to visit in the weeks preceding her passing. Even while her health was declining, Florence kept her incredible sense of humour, entertaining her family, friends, doctors, and nurses and lifting everyone's spirits with her jokes and smile. Florence is survived by her brother, Ed (Bev) and sister, Dorothy (Gomer). She will be greatly missed by her children, Maria (Nev), Sylvia (Bob), Allan (Jeannette), and Larry. Florence was blessed with many nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, who will mourn her loss. Florence was predeceased by her husband, James, sister, Eva, and, tragically, by three of her children, Andrea (Don), Jim (Wendy), and Lori (Logan), and her granddaughter, DeeDee. Born in Edmonton on December 27, 1919, Florence and her sister, Eva were raised by their Cree grandmother, Marguerite in Winnipeg. Florence made Winnipeg her home for her long life, where she impressively raised a family while working for CN for over 25 years. Always with a smile on her face, Florence could be found knitting vibrant afghan blankets, yelling "BINGO!" at the casino, rolling out dough for a big batch of perogies, playing a fierce game of cards, scratching lottery tickets, and making nightly phone calls to family and friends around the country and world. She will be fondly remembered for her abundance of love, all-embracing warmth, and slightly perverted sense of humour. The interment, a graveside gathering of family and close friends, was held on Friday, March 20, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Dreams Take Flight or a charity of your choice. "G'night, g'night, g'night!"

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I first met Flo and Bubbles in 1975 when I started working with her daughter Lori, who quickly became one of my best friends. I loved her family, they were fun and happy. Lori would get embarrassed because the ladies would sing and joke around. She was lucky to have such a wonderful mother. I am blessed for having known them. - Posted by: Monica (Friend of family) on: Jan 19, 2020

  • I met Flo when she moved in with Larry who lives next door to me. I think the first time may have been when Maria was in to visit and help with the garage sale. My little dog Chloe wandered over and met with Flo and that was the start of our friendship. Her and Chloe had this ongoing love affair. When we were outside working in the yard, Flo (Neighborhood watch) would rap on her living room window and Chloe would run over and want to jump through to see Flo. We had many visits with her and of course she always had treats for Chloe. Flo was such a warm, fun loving woman and I wish I could have known her longer. She really made my life richer and I surely do miss her. Love you, Flo! - Posted by: Skip (friend and neighbor) on: Mar 23, 2015

  • Dear Mother Somewhere in my heart beneath all my grief and pain, Is a smile I will wear at the sound of your dear name. The precious word is ‘MOTHER’, she was my world you see, But now my heart is breaking cause she’s no longer here with me. God chose her for His angel to watch me from above, To guide me and advise me and know that I’m still loved. The day she had to leave me when her life on earth was through, God had better plans for her, for this, I surely knew. When I think of her kind heart and all those loving years, My memories surround me and I can’t hold back the tears. She truly was my best friend, someone I could confide in, She always had a tender touch and a warm and gentle grin. I want to thank you Mother for teaching me so well, And though the time has come that I must bid you this farewell. I’ll remember all you’ve taught me and make you proud you’ll see. Thank you my Dear Mother for all the love you showed me. Although you’ve left this earth and now you’ve taken flight, I know that you are here with me each morning, noon and night. - Posted by: Allan (Son) on: Mar 21, 2015

  • My mom, Ruth, met Flo and Eva when they were all in their early teens and they always kept in touch with one another right up until my mom visited Flo a few days before her passing. I have enjoyed many stories of their years of friendship, which friendship my mom treasured. She will miss Flo and their birthday phone calls to one another. Our deepest sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Pam Heinrichs () on: Mar 21, 2015

  • This woman was a great inspiration to anyone she met. Down to earth and always available with kind words. I will never forget how young she always sounded and felt. And I attribute my BINGO fascination from her. I'm addicted to playing and it makes me feel close to her. May I be as strong as she was. Love you Grandma - Posted by: kim mayer (granddaughter) on: Mar 21, 2015
