YONG VONG It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Yong Vong. He was born March 8, 1938 in Lai Chau, Vietnam. He left us on March 22, 2015 after courageously fighting a long term illness. Yong was predeceased by his oldest son Khieng, as well as his niece Ling. Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife of 56 years, Chansy; his children and their spouses, Va (Sengkeo), Khouang (Mannie), Sai (Laurine), Ninee (Jason), and Tinhai (Amber); his nephews Ming (Yu Pin), Kong (Jennifer) and Tynoi (Nicole); his grandchildren, Christina, Felicia, Noelle, Brandon, Kevin, Nathalie, Jessica, Kenneth, Kaitlyn, Jasmine, Shaelynn, Bryanna, Victoria, Olivia, Mya, Kian and Kira. In 1959, Yong married Chansy, the love of his life, in Laos and rejoiced in the birth of six children. Yong worked hard and found success in numerous business endeavours. In 1977, to escape the unstable political environment of the time, Yong and Chansy made a difficult decision to leave Laos. They sought safety, refuge and a better future in Thailand where they lived for three and a half years before leaving in early 1980. In February 1980, the family moved to Winnipeg where they were sponsored by Bethel Mennonite Church. Yong never forgot his roots and took great pride in his Chinese heritage. He passed on the importance of strong family values and traditions onto his family which they still practice today. Yong, along with other newcomers to Canada helped establish the Indochina Chinese Association of Manitoba of which he was particularly proud. Yong found great joy watching his children and grandchildren grow. In particular, it was easy to see the love and special bonds he had with his grandchildren. He enjoyed weekly family dinners and Chansy's wonderful cooking. Yong's friends would describe him as loyal, honest, and a person of great integrity. He was well respected by his peers and those who came to know him. The family would like to thank all the physicians, nurses, and nurses aides at Seven Oaks Hospital who oversaw the care of our father. A viewing will be held on Friday, March 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB. The funeral will be on Saturday, March 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lung Association of Manitoba.
