DOROTHY DOREEN GILLEN Peacefully, after a struggle with several health issues, Dorothy Doreen Gillen passed on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was born Doreen Smith in Leeds, Yorkshire on December 12, 1925 and was the loving spouse of the late James Mannix Gillen. Doreen will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her two sons, Kevin and Chris; daughter-in-law Lynette; as well as her two grandsons, Liam and Stephen. In 1958, Doreen met her "Jim" in Leeds and moved to Canada, where they married in Winnipeg. Mum worked hard to raise her boys and a few Cairn Terriers along the way while still working at various jobs including the Canadian Grain Commission, the Sherbrook Animal Hospital and finally for the Royal Bank. She and Jim spent many happy years at their little cottage at Victoria Beach where Doreen had many friends and where her boys spent many happy summers. After retirement she and Jim had some wonderful trips to Europe and other places in North America. After Jim's death in 1998, Doreen kept busy as a volunteer and continued to travel with friends. A Service of Remembrance for Doreen will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Worship Centre in Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate staff at Deer Lodge Centre for making Doreen's life at the centre very special. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Sorry we could not be with all of you today as we are visiting Brent and family in Toronto. Doreen was a wonderful neighbor and friend. May your family cherish all the wonderful memories and good times you shared together. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. • I am so sad to see this news. Mrs. Gillen was indeed a lady. I was friends with both Chris and Kevin for several years, and also part of that noisy rock band in the basement Mike Parker mentioned. I remember Mrs. Gillen fondly, she was always so warm and generous. Gracious too in letting us make all that noise in the basement. She welcomed me into her home, and once or twice at the cottage. She and Jim were quality people, full of wisdom and mirth. My dad was very fond of both of them, and my mom will be equally saddened by this news. She was a indeed a lady. And I loved her accent. My deepest condolences to Chris, Kevin and the family. Rick Yarish - Posted by: Rick Yarish (Neighbour and friend) on: Mar 29, 2015

  • Our sympathies to the Gillens on the passing of Doreen. We were neighbours at Victoria beach and always looked forward seeing Doreen & Jim as well as the boys, Chris & Kevin at the beginning of many wonderful summers at the beach. Doreen was a kind & caring woman, full of energy and always a desire to please. Rest in peace dear friend. - Posted by: Audrey & Dick (friends) on: Mar 29, 2015

  • With Kevin being my best childhood friend for many years, the Gillen household was like a second home to me. Of course Jim and Doreen, as patient as they could possibly be, were often host to many kids running around their house playing with GI Joes and Star Trek on their cabinet stereo. Later it was a rock band, with Chris focusing on acoustic guitar and bass, while Kevin took up the more "sonically intrusive" drums as his instrument of choice. Throughout, there was Doreen and Jim, putting up with the mayhem, and always welcoming. Doreen has joined Jim now, where they are probably sitting in a lovely garden, sipping tea, and watching Barney and Raj (sp) frolic and play. RIP Mrs. Gillen. - Posted by: Mike Parker (Family friend) on: Mar 29, 2015

  • It was my joy to play piano for T3 on Fridays and Doreen was a very special participant. She was always smiling and happy to see me. She gave me many compliments. She always looked and acted like a Lady. - Posted by: Faith Johnson (volunteer on T3) on: Mar 27, 2015

  • A wave of sadness came over me as I read of the passing of a good friend from Columbus Cres. days. She was my walking partner, and in many respects, my entertainment for the day as we shared many laughs. What a great lady, and it was so difficult to understand how such a keen spirit and mind can be taken from us. I visited a few times in Deer Lodge, but the recognition had passed, and she was waiting for Christopher to take her out. I would like to join with you on Wed. however, Kim is coming from Calgary and we have made other arrangements if the day is decent weather wise. Our condolences to Chris, Kevin, Lynette and the boys. Doreen has passed but her face and character shall remain in our memories. My husband always referred to her as "Lady Gillen". And she truly was a lady. - Posted by: Helen Morrow (friend) on: Mar 27, 2015
