  • In the early 1970's I was the Mine Engineer at Inco Ltd.'s Thompson Mine in Thompson, Manitoba. 'Hal' was my Chief Surveyor. He was a true professional and dedicated surveyor who protected his mine surveyor's reputations at all times against those who would challenge them in the quality of their work or accuracy of their calculations. A mine surveyor's job in those pre-computer days was difficult, consisting of surveying underground with theodolites and using 5 figure log tables in the accuracy of their work. Miner's lives literally depended on the accuracy of Hal's mine surveyor's calculations and Hal's 'checking and signing-off' on all of their work before underground mining was allowed to proceed. If 'Hal' said it was so, it was so and you could take his word to the bank! I am proud to have known him and to have worked with (for) him and am very saddened to read of his passing. My condolences go out to Hal's family on his passing. I hope that these few words of mine bring his family some comfort, and pride, in knowing that 'Hal' was truly a pioneer in ensuring that mine surveying was deservedly recognized as a professional career in mining in Canada. - Posted by: Barry Hadfield (Friend and ex-work colleague from Inco, Ltd.
