STAN (STASH) BERNAS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, papa, brother and uncle on March 27, 2015. Dad will be missed always by his three children, Angie, Lisa (John) and Brent (Charmaine); treasured grandsons, Griffin, Morgan, Sean and Emmett; along with his five brothers, three sisters and many nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by his best friend and loyal dog Matowy. Stan loved the simple things in life, nothing made him happier than a warm day in his backyard reading a book or doing a puzzle surrounded by his grandsons. If he wasn't outside tinkering in his yard, he was inside cheering on the Jets or the Bombers. Stan spent 35 years teaching, which brought him pride and joy. He was loved by his students for his unique teaching style and quirky ways. Stan loved teaching so much that even after retirement he volunteered his time at several schools within his community. He also enjoyed his retirement by taking computer classes, doing Tai Chi, riding his bike and he was an active member of the Robertson-Mynarski Resident Association. "Life will be a very great deal less weird without you." "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" Following a private family service, an open house will take place at 1019 Bannerman on Saturday, April 25, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. All those whose lives have been touched by Stan are welcome to pay their final respects. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit.

Stan was a fun teacher to work with. He had a distinctive look with his wild patterned pants. He would have fit on the Norwegian curling team very nicely. He had a great sense of humor so was a lot of fun to be around. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Bonnie Davies (Teacher friend) on: Apr 21, 2015

I'm sad Mr B has passed. When I was a student in junior high I remember it was he and Mr Shadlock who helped me through my personal distress. They seemed to be the only ones who could see through my fake smile and took the time to help me feel better. They impacted my life greatly and I think of them both often. I hated French class but when the option was there, I took it anyway so I could still hang out with Mr Bernas. He had a caring, understanding and kind soul. I always enjoyed my talks with him. Such a great person who will be missed. My condolences to the family... - Posted by: Amber McInnes (Former student) on: Apr 13, 2015

I had the privilege to cut Stan's hair for many years. We would chat about life and all its twists n turns, all with a laugh. He truly loved his family and all the students, because they were often the topic of conversation. His wit, humor and intellect was boundless. I feel a great sorrow from his passing as he was a kindred spirit to me. He was quick to praise and encourage when it was deserved, making him the teacher and great man he was. My condolence to the family and friends. Remember him with a smile and warm thoughts. - Posted by: Ken Ruhr (barber) on: Apr 10, 2015

I was extremely affected when I heard the news about Mr. B. Like many others here, he helped me through tough times in gr. 7. I loved him, but I hated French. lol. For some reason, he listened to my reasoning for it, and decided to give me a 'spare'. The last half of gr. 7, I did not have to go to class...this was with his complete approval, I have NO idea how he pulled that off! It did not affect my passing to gr. 8, and I could do whatever I chose to do during our 'French' class. I am forever grateful to him, for having such an open mind! Love you Mr. Bernas! xo - Posted by: Kelly Chartrand (Mckinnon) (student) on: Apr 10, 2015

what a man...he went above and beyond....don't really want to share what he did for me but to summarize he helped me through some of my darkest times..and he was as much a student as he was a teacher..but not a very good goalie literally.. but the saves he made in real life...he belongs in the hall of fame - Posted by: kevin bond (student) on: Apr 10, 2015

So sad to hear about the passing of Mr. B. As many former students have already said, he was a great teacher and a lot of fun. He also taught both of my children at Balmoral (and we share the same funny stories about Mr. B). My thoughts go out to his family. - Posted by: Bonnie Hollingshead (Stewart) (former student) on: Apr 09, 2015

Special teachers like Mr. Bernas should last forever. His name brought a smile to everyone's face. As a custodian, I was pleasantly surprised when I would find his name under hand dryers, desks, etc. He left his special humor behind. He was really missed when he left TCI. We were all lucky to have had a share in his life. Take care. - Posted by: joan barten (custodian at tci) on: Apr 09, 2015

As you can see by the many comments and condolences here Stash was a wonderful person! This man will not be forgotten and I don't think he realized how much students and staff appreciated his style as his style was quite unique. He had a way with the students that was above all others! He left a lasting impression and he was always thinking of others before himself. We had many meaningful discussions and lots of chats during our time working at Balmoral Elementary school. He had a way of making learning fun! So sorry to hear of your loss and sad to hear you are gone but never ever forgotten! Stan made a positive impact on many people's lives I don't really think he knew how many lives he touched. To the family my thoughts are with you but I know you can see how well liked and personal Stan was. RIP my friend. - Posted by: Brenda Lange (Co-worker/friend) on: Apr 08, 2015

In a lifetime only a handful of teachers will have such an impact on their students that they are always remembered. Mr. B was one of those for me and so many others. He had a way of connecting with his students that others couldn't. My deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Karen Stoyles (nee Castelein) (former student) on: Apr 08, 2015

So sad to hear about the passing of one of our favourite teachers. His class was always so much fun and he could rarely stay serious for long. As well as teaching us French, he was always up for talking about sports, music and so much more; often being the one students turned to for someone to talk to about their problems. He will be missed. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Cheryl Marquette (Former student) on: Apr 07, 2015

Stan Bernas was one of the special teachers. He was kind, caring, understanding, and comical. HE made an impact on so many students. He was easy to talk to. And If u ever had a personal issue he would listen and help. He helped me through a few very hard times in my life. There was one especially that he helped me with that made a big impact on my life. He was a big fan of the DOORS. Sometimes he played them during class. He will be missed but knowing Mr.B he is teaching something somewhere. We will all miss u. RIP MR. B My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Marla Beauchemin (nee Gretsinger) (former student ) on: Apr 07, 2015

Mr. "B" One sleeve up & one sleeve down. What a kind, funny man. I was happy to run into him about 5 years ago in "his hood" (on Bannerman) He was riding his bike, wearing a reflective vest *that I naturally teased him about* He stopped to chat, we caught up, each shared a memory & went on our way. RIP & to the Bernas family: May you find comfort in knowing that 'It is not good bye, it is until you meet again...' - Posted by: Tara Baley (nee Weselak) (former student) on: Apr 06, 2015

I have many fond memories of Mr Bernas. Everyone liked Mr B. I think mainly he was a big kid at heart, we enjoyed watching him and my dad have a "dual" in the hallway every parent teacher. He was a great mentor he was someone you can go to with anything not just with school related. I haven't seen him for a few years but I still thought about him, how he impacted on my life. Rest easy Mr B, we will see you again on the other side. - Posted by: Danna Shannon ( former st2) on: Apr 06, 2015

Sorry for your loss. I was shocked to hear of his passing. Mr.B was well known at TCI. He was one of my favorite teachers. I have many memories of him, Mr. Shad and Mr. Oughton yelling at each other in the hallway, or bugging students. He made French class fun. His mustache and flair for parachute pants were common knowledge around the school. He will be greatly missed by all. - Posted by: Dorothy Farmer (Former student) on: Apr 06, 2015

Oh man where to start. Well Mr. B was the first teacher I was introduced to when we moved to Teulon. He was my homeroom teacher and my French teacher. He helped me thru a lot throughout my school years and not only was he a teacher but he was someone I considered as my confidant and mentor. He was always there when I needed help or someone to talk to when I couldn't talk to anyone else. He was much more than a teacher he was like a best friend. We loved him like he was a member of our family. R.I.P Mr. B you will be greatly missed - Posted by: Lori Philion (Former Student) on: Apr 06, 2015

Mr Bernas truly was a great teacher, he knew that teaching was more than teaching french. He loved us all and made a difference in so many students' lives. He will be missed down here by so many but I am sure he was welcomed at the Pearly Gates by loved ones, and John Shadlock, Ray Teperto, and Jim Morrison (as we all know Mr B was the most loyal Doors fan EVER). I am sure heaven will never be the same again...thanks for all you did for ALL of us Mr. B! You were a great man and will never be forgotten. Kelly & my sincerest condolences to his beloved family. - Posted by: Lana Knor (former student) on: Apr 06, 2015

I got in touch with Stan some years ago (and so thankful I did) when Ed. students were encouraged to reach out to a teacher who had inspired them, in my case to follow in his footsteps and teach French. He was a fun, awesome teacher and remained a great friend and mentor. Safe journey Stash. - Posted by: Kathy Simcoe (Former student) on: Apr 06, 2015

Mr. Bernas was one of the best teachers I had while at Teulon Collegiate. He was all about results and he knew how to get them out of you. A true motivator and friend to all he oversaw in his times walking the halls of the school. Always willing to lend an ear in time of need but never would he ever give you a pass if he felt you were wrong or out of line. Save a seat for all of us at God's table till we see you again. You may be gone from here but you are certainly not forgotten. - Posted by: Malcolm Shmelinski (Student) on: Apr 06, 2015

Mr. Bernas was an outstanding teacher and caring person. He actually took the time and interest in his students not go through the motions. Be it an issue with his or another subject, or a personal issue, Mr. Bernas always had time to listen and if one wanted, he would provide advice. He took the time to get me through grade 10 and grade 12 french (skipping grade 11) when he didn't have to, and actually stood up for me to do this when the school adminstration was against. You will be deeply missed Mr. B. :( - Posted by: Ernest Rodenbour (student) on: Apr 06, 2015

Stan was truly one of a kind. I will never forget how he always had his ONE shirt sleeve rolled up, or how we would come in to class early and he would be "air-drumming" to some tunes (probably the Doors).. Al Oughton, John Shadlock and Stan used to have their offices together at the east end of the Jr High hallway. It was awesome to walk by and hear the crashing banging and booming coming from behind the locked door.. then all three fellas would emerge, claiming that they needed a little stress relief.. haha! C.O.S. taught us all a lesson in respect. And Stan taught us all a lesson in how you can help anyone who wants to be helped, if you just listen to them and show that you care. Bless you Stan. Have a shot with The Bah for me. ~Trev - Posted by: Trevor Ewankiw (Student and friend) on: Apr 06, 2015

So very sad to hear of Mr. B's passing. Great Man & Great teacher @ T.C.I . I enjoyed going to his French class. Will always remember our 25 cent cuss pot in class. Mr. B was an inspiration to me as a student at Teulon Collegiate. He truly cared about his students and made learning fun! He taught me a lot as a student, and as his student teacher. I am proud to continue his legacy at TCI as I teach French in the same classroom that was once his! Stan loved to play pranks on his colleagues, but also knew how to take a joke as well. I remember a time when a few of us hid his desk in the girls' washroom. He never got mad, but I do believe he got even! Stan lives on in the crooks and crannies of the school, as he was sure to sign his name in numerous hidden places before he left TCI. Rest in peace, Mr. B...you will never be forgotten! - Posted by: Lesley Philippot (Persoage) (Former student at Teulon Collegiate) on: Apr 05, 2015

I have many fond memories of him. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. And, oh his love for the Jets and Bombers! Mr. Oughton, Mr. Shadlock and he were quite the threesome. He had such a warm heart and great sense of humour. Our French class gave him a run for his money - moving all the desks out or re-arranging them when he would go to the office. He was so patient and he helped me tremendously during my junior high years. I have thought of him many times over the years. I'm so sorry for your loss. It was too soon. My thoughts and prayers to his family. - Posted by: Julie Chudak (Former TCI student) on: Apr 05, 2015

So extremely sorry to hear of Stan's passing .My condolences to his family on their loss. Mr.B, what can you say about him other than he was a great guy and a wonderful teacher. He taught with genuine pride in what he was doing and always took the time to help whoever needed it with no questions asked. He truly enjoyed teaching and he took it very seriously and with a little humor to go along. Always remember going to Gimli to a badminton tournament with him on the bus and he had Brent with him. What a good kid never made a noise all day. Stan showed me that day not only what a great teacher he was but also a great dad. Teulon collegiate really missed him when he left to teach elsewhere. How sad to read about a childhood school-mate who has passed away. I remember Stanley as a friendly little boy who everyone liked very much because of his kind ways. I never saw him after the Robertson School days, but oddly enough I too kept a connection with Roberson School by being a teacher at that school as well as a parent-counsel rep. It's surprising our paths never crossed again. Mr. Bernas was a teacher of mine in high school. He was so much fun. Considering high school can be quite a challenge, he actually made it enjoyable to go to class. He always had a smile on his face, and seemed to really enjoy being a teacher. So sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Darlene Walsh (Former Student) on: Apr 04, 2015
