PAULINE ALARIE "God is able to do in you more than you are able to imagine." Ephesians 3:20 It is with deep sadness that the Alarie Family announces the passing of our beloved sister, Pauline, with Cecile and Harry by her side. Following a two year struggle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Pauline passed away in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec on December 16, 2014, at the age of 67 years. A funeral mass was held in St. Hyacinthe, on December 22, 2014. The eldest of six children, Pauline was born to Paul and Jeannette (Chagnon) on December 14, 1947, in Pine Falls, Manitoba. In 1965 after graduating from Powerview Collegiate, she moved to Quebec to join the religious community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Hyacinthe. During this 28 year vocation she graduated from the University of Manitoba and taught in schools in The Pas, Eriksdale, and Winnipeg. In 1990, Pauline followed up on her missioning dream by moving to Lesotho, Africa, where she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults. In 1993, she returned to Canada, left religious life, settled in Quebec and started her own business as an ESL teacher (Bi-ComPlus). She offered translation and interpretation services in various parts of Canada, USA, Brazil and Lesotho. She saw this work as a means of building bridges between cultural groups - her way of creating a better world. Throughout her life, prayer and meditation played an important role in Pauline's daily ritual. She was actively involved in a number of organizations in the school system, as well as locally and internationally, e.g. Development and Peace and environmental issues. Her interests included aqua-gym, watercolour art, sewing and crafts and outings with friends. In later life, she became an avid gardener and a passionate landscaper. During her cancer years, Pauline focused on gratitude for all that life had given her and on strengthening ties with family and friends. A woman of deep faith, courage and independence, Pauline will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her mother, Jeannette (Chagnon) in 2005 and her father, Paul in 2012. She leaves to mourn her passing five siblings: Cécile (Harry Skene), Maurice (Odile St. Pierre), Annette (Ronald Chevrefils), Diane, Denise (Ian Cyr), as well as nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-niece, aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends in Manitoba, Quebec, Lesotho and Brazil. Pauline's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Hotel-Dieu Palliative Care Unit in St. Hyacinthe, QC, where she spent the last two months of her life, to her many friends in Quebec, especially Lucie, Sylvie and Claudette for their friendship and support, and to all those who spent prayerful time with Pauline and her family during this difficult phase of her life. In keeping with her environmental concerns and her values as an educator Pauline made a "final" major decision of donating her body to research. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Notre-Dame-du-Laus Church, Powerview, MB. Father James Gray presiding.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Sister Alarie was my grade 7 language arts teacher at Scott Bateman, and she was more stern than some other teachers, but also so smart with a sharp wit, she had a way of pretending to be more stern than she was, and I remember thinking she was so intriguing! - Posted by: Caitlin Stewart (Former student) on: Oct 06, 2017

  • She was my Grade Seven teacher at Scott Bateman Junior High in The Pas. She was an amazing teacher, and always had this aura of calm, and peacefulness around her even when chaos was breaking out in the classroom. One day she made us all listen to Simon & Garfunkel on the record player during class. It was "Bridge Over Troubled Water"..loved them ever since hearing that song. Sister Pauline..you will be missed in this life. You helped a lot of young people grow up to be wonderful people...you are a true Angel. - Posted by: Krystelle Byttynen (Sasek) (Former student) on: May 11, 2015

  • She was my grade 7 teacher in The Pas and was an amazing teacher! Will always remember her denim skirts with the multi coloured socks and her wonderful smile. My condolences to all of her family and friends. - Posted by: Wendy Hall (Former student) on: May 10, 2015

  • I enjoyed her Ancient History class, and the classes she taught in Gr. 7 at Scott Bateman Junior High: her sense of humour was dry and subtle. - Posted by: Guy Stewart (Student) on: May 10, 2015

  • She was more than a teacher to me. I made contact with Pauline just to say hello and let her know that I was living a successful life in part thanks to her teaching and friendship towards me. I look at the picture and she really hasn't changed from when she was here in The Pas. I will miss you, rest in peace my friend! - Posted by: Wayne Huculak (she was my grade 7 teacher and a very good friend) on: Apr 08, 2015
