JOHN CHARLES MACKELSON John Charles Mackelson, age 50, died tragically on Thursday, April 9, 2015, following a motorcycling accident in North Saanich, BC. Born May 8, 1964, in Selkirk, MB, and moved to Sidney, Vancouver Island with his parents as a child, John was known and loved by all those who knew him, and whose lives he touched. John was a French trained chef, who worked for the last 20+ years with Thrifty Foods at their Thrifty Food Kitchens on Keating, Sidney store and had recently moved to the Saanichton store in February 2015. John not only touched the hearts of his fellow employees, but his customers as well. His positive attitude was what everyone loved so much about him, and how he would do anything to help anyone in times of need. He will be fondly remembered by many, for his volunteer work each Christmas preparing and serving at the Peninsula Christmas dinner; for his love of the great outdoors - mountain biking, hiking and swimming; for cheering on his Detroit Red Wings, and most of all his dogs - for Mario and Murphy. John leaves behind heartbroken family in the US (Jeff, Britt, Tyler, Lora, Rick and Yulia), and in Winnipeg - Eileen. Most of all he leaves behind his true soulmate, best friend and biggest fan - his wife Claire. A private service will be held for family and close friends on Wednesday, April 15. A celebration of life is being planned for end of June / early July 2015 to which friends and community will be invited. As a legacy of John's volunteer work with Peninsula Christmas Day lunch, his family would appreciate donations, in lieu of flowers, to help support the Christmas lunch. Please deliver all donations to the Sidney Thrifty Foods store. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I was lucky to meet John just after he moved to Sidney, we've been friends since. Along with other friends I always remember John was always up for a ride wether it be on a mountain bike, Trials or street bike. For the last several years I've been working and living in Alberta, I'd always get a message from my mom "John says hello." What I remember most and will miss the most, his smile. - Posted by: Darryl Haines (Long time friend) on: Apr 17, 2015

  • Rest in peace old friend!! Ride like the wind up there bud!!!!! I met John in the '80s when he became a friend of my boyfriend's at the time. Spent lots of time riding motorbikes (I was a passenger) and drinking coffee with him at robins donuts - Sidney....he always had a warm and welcoming smiling. Heaven just gained an awesome soul!!!!! - Posted by: Eanna Nunn - Carter (Old friend) on: Apr 17, 2015

  • I first met John back in the late '80s, right about the time when he move to Sidney from Manitoba and we became friends from then on. We shared many many miles out on the roads riding all over the peninsula and lower part of the island. John always had something infectious about him that always made you feel more positive and happy, his smile. I don't think in all the years that I have known John there isn't one time that his cheerful grin didn't appear. Rest peacefully my friend. - Posted by: Kevin Roberts (Friend) on: Apr 17, 2015

  • I will miss John's cheerful, mellow approach to life. I always enjoyed chatting with him at Thrifty's, and on the trails at Horth Hill, and around Sidney. My deepest sympathies to Claire and to his family. - Posted by: Chris Bocking (Friend) on: Apr 16, 2015
