FUMIKO OKUMURA Fumi passed away November 27, 2014 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 94. She was born July 5, 1920 in Vancouver, BC to Shomatsu and Maka Toyama, one of ten children. Fumi grew up in Vancouver and because of the war was interned in 1942 to New Denver, BC. In April, 1945 she married Shigeharu Okumura in New Denver, BC. After the war they moved to Neepawa, MB and soon after to Winnipeg, MB where she spent the rest of her life. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Shige and brothers Chester, Seitoku, Joe, David, sister-in-law Tazuko. Fumi is survived by sons Ron (Mary), Neil (Irene), grandson Chad, granddaughter Ciara; sister Joan, brothers Toki (passed away December 23, 2014), George, Roy, Bobby (Irma) sister-in-law Kathy and many nieces and nephews. Also cousins in Japan, USA, and Okinawa. Fumi and Shige raised their family in Winnipeg. Fumi worked for many years at Carter Motors where she met her best friend Bessi Reimer. They became lifelong friends. She was a member of Harrow United church and very active in the UCW where she gave generously of her time and talent. She enjoyed travelling, reading, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren. She took up bowling and golf later in life and was a member of the Charleswood Golf Club. She enjoyed both sports into her 70's. Fumi was a good cook and enjoyed preparing Christmas and New Year's dinners with her family. She worked especially hard at New Year's preparing Japanese, Ukrainian and traditional Canadian food for a house full of friends and relatives. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion during her time there. The family would also like to thank the minister and members of Harrow United Church for their support. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2015 at Harrow United Church, 955 Mulvey Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3M 1G8. A reception will follow the service. The family has requested all donations be made to the Riverview Health Centre.
