MARGARET ELIZABETH MERRICK (PEGGY) (nee MCCHEYNE) It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of our mother, Peggy Merrick, on April 28, 2015. Born on the family farm on a sunny Sunday morning August 21, 1927 in Hamiota, MB, she was the third of six children born to Fred and Lizzie McCheyne. The family moved to Winnipeg the next year, therefore Mom considered Winnipeg her lifelong home. Mom graduated early from Daniel Mac, and in 1944 joined the navy. When it was discovered she was underage, she was kept in Canada for the remainder of the war. She spent 35 years as a credit reporter for the Credit Bureau and when she found herself with time on her hands after she retired, started a second career as a lab assistant for Dr. Ratna Boes until she permanently retired in 1993. Peggy was a Life Member of John Osborn V C A.N.A.F. #1, having the distinction of being the first woman elected as President of the unit in 2010. She dedicated many years, filling numerous chairs on the executive council, both in the unit and on Provincial Command. She worked long and hard as the Services Officer acting as the liaison with Veterans Affairs, advocating for the rights of the veterans, their widows and families. In 2012, she was honoured as a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. She was the Entertainment Chairperson for the #1 Jolly Seniors for many years and took pride in the events and outings she arranged for the enjoyment of the members. She was fiercely proud of her Scots heritage and the sound of the bagpipes could have her singing and dancing. In 1967, Peggy married Daniel Merrick, a widower with seven children. Peggy had a daughter from a previous relationship. They combined their families and together raised them, taking pride in every goal or achievement of their children. As grandchildren and great- grandchildren came along, their joy only increased. They spent their free time bowling, curling, playing bingo and loved the horse races. In later years, they travelled and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Bus trips to the American casinos being high on their list of enjoyment. Predeceased by her parents, Fred and Elizabeth, brothers Wally and Dave, sister Mary and her beloved husband Dan, she is survived by children Heather, Betty-Jane (Don Briggs), Lynne, Charles (Glenda), Dale, Danelle (Leo Fulawka), Lanny and Shawne, her brothers Jim and Bill McCheyne and their families, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Her furry grandson Murphy misses her dearly. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of 7A South, St. Boniface Hospital for their caring and compassionate care of Mom. Also, many thanks to Mom's long-time family physician Dr. Dissanayake for her care and concern for Mom. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the John Osborn V C A.N.A.F #1, 300-1395 Ellice Ave. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society in her memory would be greatly appreciated. How joyous is Heaven today as family, friends and pets that have gone before, gather on the "Bridge to Forever" to welcome Mom home. Till we meet again "Ta Ta For Now........."
