Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROWENA MARGARET (PEGGY) LAWRENCE (nee FRIESEN, formerly HUNT) January 12, 1933 - May 10, 2015 During a blinding snowstorm, Dr. Wiebe travelled 11 miles via Plum Coulee, by Model T, horse and sleigh, and finally railway jigger to Horndean. There he delivered a tiny black haired playmate for her red haired sister, June. Peggy attended school in Horndean, Ottawa, Winkler and Winnipeg. After finishing Grade 12, she began her teaching career at age 16 as a permit teacher at Cheval School near Morden. She completed her Teacher Certification in 1951 at the Provincial Normal School in Tuxedo, then returned to Cheval for another year. Peggy then taught at Poplar Point for two years and also became Mrs. Hunt. After five challenging years teaching at Argyle School in Winnipeg, the family bought a home in Transcona, becoming a family with three wonderful children. Peggy lived in this home for 56 years! She enjoyed working for the Transcona Springfield School Division as a kindergarten teacher, Primary Consultant then as Assistant to the Superintendent until retirement at age 65. Peggy is survived by her husband Jim Lawrence, daughter Laney Hunt (David Waldman), son Michael Hunt (Mimi and Jude), stepchildren Robert (Debbie) Lawrence, Laurie (Jim) Green, Joyce (Neil) Sorenson, Beverly (Shane) Olson, and grandchildren Kahlil (Karen), Orion, Allyssa, Kaiya, Latitia, Willow, Aaron, Leah, Krystal, Hailey, Hayden, Everett and Cole. She is also survived by Sandra Soke, her siblings Verna Howarth, and Ralph (Bev) Milton, and former husband Marvin Hunt. Peggy was predeceased by her parents H.M. and Marie (Reimer) Friesen, son Tim Hunt, sister June, and brother Randy. Peggy and Jim met on a church study tour to Cuba and were married on June 26, 1999. They travelled throughout Canada, to Jim's heritage Dauphin area farm and six pilgrimages to Europe, the British Isles, Ireland and Czech Republic. Participating in Church activities, especially singing in the Church Chancel Choir, were very important to both Jim and Peggy. A Celebration of Life will be held at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West on Friday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m. A private family interment will take place at a later date in Dauphin. Recently, I was informed of Peggy's death which occurred over a year ago. I have just located her obituary. Peggy and I were members of Class C at Provincial Normal School in Winnipeg in 1950-1951. I remember her as a very friendly and outgoing student. We were out of contact for many years. She was one of three Normalites who contacted me in 1996 when we lived in Mexico. I learned much of her personal history of those missing years when she sent me her story for a book that I was compiling in 2008 about our classmates. Many points, including how she taught inner city children to read, impressed me. At the 2009 reunion, she, Jim, Pam, and I sat at the same table for one meal. Upon my asking, she told us that story again. At the 2011 reunion, which I did not attend, she read aloud to the attendees a letter that I had written. She was devoted to her teaching, her missionary work, her children, and to Jim. You can be well pleased with her accomplishments and devotion. All of us miss her. - Posted by: Duane Duff (Classmate) on: Aug 13, 2016

We first met Peggy when we joined TMUC over 25 years ago. Peggy was a very warm-hearted person who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with children whether it be reading to them in Sunday School or being a part of CGIT. We have many fond memories of Peggy. Our deepest sympathies to Peggy's family. - Posted by: The Kevin Drennan Family () on: May 13, 2015
