JOAN FUSTEY Joan Fustey (nee Russell), beloved wife of Jim Fustey, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2015, at the age of 81, at the Laurel Place Hospice Residence in Surrey, BC after a prolonged and brave battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Joan was born in Winnipeg and married Jim on July 18, 1959. They were long-time residents of Winnipeg until they relocated to Surrey, BC in 1989. She will always be lovingly remembered by her husband Jim, daughter Cheryl, son Alan, daughter-in-law Mary, and treasured grandchildren Andrew and Meghan. Joan was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Florence Russell, her four brothers, Churchill, Gordon, Basil and Don; and by her sister Edna Keyes. She is survived by her brother Raymond Russell (Carol) of Nanaimo, BC, sisters-in-law Gladys Russell of Plano, Texas and Barbara Russell of Sydney, BC. Surviving in Winnipeg are sisters-in-law Doris Osesky, Eleanor Marino, Margaret Semenchuk (Steve), and many nieces and nephews. Joan was a devoted fan of baseball, curling and hockey. She was a lover of nature and art, which inspired her to become an accomplished painter. This passion was expressed in her acrylic furniture paintings and her numerous water colour paintings which depicted her love of birds, animals and the majesty of seascapes. Her memory and her love will remain with us as a beautiful gift. The brilliance of her paintings will continue to shine and provide comfort to us all. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg. Those wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so to the ALS Society of B.C. or the charity of their choice.

Our deepest condolences to Jim, Cheryl, Alan and all the family. Jim and Joan have been our neighbours in Surrey for 22 years. We will miss Joan so much. She alway shared a warm smile and was so kind. Her talent for painting was amazing and to see the work of arts she created was always a joy. She was a strong woman with pride and grace. We wish so badly that she had never had to go through the horrible road of ALS. She did it with quiet dignity. She will be a special part of our memories. - Posted by: Doug, Brenda, Dustin & Katrina Dauncey () on: Jun 02, 2015

So sorry to hear of Joan's passing. Even after the move to BC years ago; she still kept in touch at Christmas time sending a card along with enclosing a nice note. Sending our sincere Condolences to Jim, Alan and Cheryl. We hope that the wonderful memories you have of your mother/wife will get you through this difficult time. God Bless - Posted by: Stuart Family (neighbors) on: May 25, 2015

This is an memory of Joan Fustey, a long time neighbour, wonderful talented artist and gone much too soon, expected to reflect her own mother's longevity. Our families both as members of the "exclusive" Charter 19 homes group on Red Robin in WPG enjoyed a unique togetherness level of friendship. Joan's ALS came as a surprise to both Kay and me. Let us all work to fight and eliminate what is one of the worst afflictions for man. This comment was my addition to an ALS/BC segment and I felt that it was appropriate here. With sincere regards, sympathy and support to Jim, Cheryl, Alan and family. Rest in peace dear Joan. - Posted by: Harold/Kay McCort (Long time friends) on: May 24, 2015
