VERE HUNT SCOTT
Date of Passing: May 18, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERE HUNT SCOTT 1942 - 2015 On May 18, 2015 at Victoria General Hospital we lost a hidden community treasure, researcher, ecologist, natural historian, local historian, teacher, compost master, excellent listener, and friend, Vere, aged 73, of Winnipeg. Vere is survived by his son Humus (Maggie Gilbert), grandson George, sister Dianne (Rod Nerbas) and nephews Michael and Scott. Vere was predeceased by his mother Katherine Taylor (nee Hunt) (1991) and father Albert George (1994). Born in Winnipeg, he lived most of his life in Fort Rouge. An early interest in natural history led Vere to a BSc in agriculture, work in the fields of wildlife biology and agriculture, and developed his ecological literacy. A passion for local history and ecology drove him to political candidacy, regular columns in the Riverview Reflector, and meticulous study of both River Park and his own genealogy. As he wished, to close his material loop, burial has taken place. A time to honour Vere and celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Call 204-783-3559 for details.

Vere was one of the most conscientious and aware people I have ever known. He taught by example, living his life according to his best principles and basing those principles on rigorous thinking. We have lost a strong voice for ecological wisdom. - Posted by: Ardythe Basham (friend) on: May 31, 2015

I remember the first time I met Vere; he was my Provincial Green Party candidate. Every time I asked him a question, his answer was "Is that really the right question?". When I look back on my notes of that first meeting, I wrote "Evasive!". But something kept drawing me back to talk to him again, (and again and again). I wasn't asking the right questions. Vere, I hope I am closer to asking the right questions. You will be missed. - Posted by: Linda Olson (friend) on: May 29, 2015

Vere was a gentleman, scholar, and perhaps most importantly a kind soul. Never afraid to challenge the understanding of others, many people -- myself included -- learned much from Vere. His wisdom will subtly live on through those he taught, but we can never replace his wisdom. I will miss Vere intensely. In the past few years I would periodically run into him at the Manitoba Archives doing research. I would always chat him up. What I would not give for one more debate on an issue of ecology, politics, or natural history. Condolences to Vere's family, loved ones, and his many friends. - Posted by: James Beddome () on: May 28, 2015
