RUPINDER (ROOP) SINGAL December 29, 1946 - May 27, 2015 It is with profound sadness we share the news of the passing of our beloved Rupinder (Roop) Singal. She is survived by her husband Pawan and their children Rohit (Deepa) and Mona (Kunal) along with her grandchildren Shayar and Jiya. She is also remembered by her parents Col. Kalyan Singh and Harbans Kaur Sandhu as well as her siblings Deshpal (Pavan), Rattan (Naunihal) and Sudhir (Suenita). Roop was predeceased by her sister Paramjot. She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends who also benefitted from her love. Roop was born in Bhikhipind, India. Growing up she took on significant responsibility raising her four younger siblings developing multiple talents and tastes as a cook, seamstress and lover of music. Her academic ambition as a woman was progressive for her time, leaving for Punjab University (Chandigarh) in 1965 where she earned her BSc(hon) and MSc (Biophysics). This boldness was manifest in her discovery of the Love of her Life during her Masters. At a time when arranged marriage was the norm, she chose instead to follow Pawan to Edmonton where they were married in a small court ceremony in 1974. They enjoyed a fascinating exploration of life in Canada with great friends, moving to Saskatoon where Rohit was born and eventually settling in Winnipeg where Mona born. Therein began a long history of supporting and settling family members from India all of whom lived with Roop and Pawan before moving on to productive professional and family lives as proud Canadians. From 1982 to 2010 this included their three parents, six siblings and two nieces/nephews. Over this period Roop also worked as a lab technician at the University of Manitoba. Truly the woman behind the man, she supported Pawan in his research career becoming a beloved member of an international circle of friends and colleagues. They travelled the world relishing the discovery of cultures, customs and cuisines. Though an independent and strong woman, she took the greatest pride in supporting Pawan and living life as his Dame . Mother to all, she was always first and foremost mother to her own children in whom she instilled values, education and appreciation of their history and heritage. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2013, she once again carried her family on her shoulders as she bravely and intelligently fought for her life. In those final two years she achieved a decades worth of activity, the highlights of which were Mona's wedding and her 41st wedding anniversary. She will be remembered fondly by all for her love of life which was expressed as culture, grace and loving care. The family will be remembering Roop's life at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Shanti Paath and Prayers in the evening at Hindu temple, 999 St. Anne's Road at 6:00 p.m. Her family is ever thankful to Dr. Lotocki and the wonderful staff at Cancer Care Manitoba, Women's Hospital, Palliative Care Services and especially 6A West at St. Boniface General Hospital where the last days of her life were spent with superb care of her needs and her dignity. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Cancer Care Manitoba. THOMSON IN THE PARK 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Very sad to get this news. She has been a rare example who in spite of being a scientist provided valuable contribution in terms of instilling family and cultural values of the highest order. Roopji supported number of siblings and spread the message of friendliness. Myself and my wife Shakuntala remember her great hospitality and caring nature during our visit to Winnipeg and other places we met. She was brave in all walks of life ans we did see even when she had tragic disease. It is a great loss not only to her family but also friends like us. May her soul rests in peace. May god give enough strength to family members to bear this great irreparable loss. - Posted by: Ram (Friend) on: May 30, 2015

She was part of our small group of 15 classmates. She recently visited India to participate in Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Department of Biophysics, Punjab University inspite of her frail health knowing well the dangers of travel against medical advice. We cherish memories of the time spent together in the university. - Posted by: Dr. Prem Sagar Gupta (Classmate) on: May 30, 2015
