MARY ELIZABETH HILL After battling a long and challenging illness, Mary Elizabeth Hill passed away on Monday, May 25, 2015. At her side were her husband of 55 years John and children Kevin and Emma. She was 78. Mary Wright was born in County Derry, Northern Ireland, and grew up near the town of Magherafelt. A free spirit, Mary left home at 15 and worked across Ulster and on the Isle of Man before moving to England to join the Women's Royal Naval Service in 1957. There she learned to both fire a rifle and organize an Admiral's reception. A chance meeting on the Torpoint Ferry going to the Devonport Naval Base saw Mary meet and fall in love with John Hill, a Gunner with the Royal Navy. In 1960, John and Mary were married. Eight years later, John would leave the navy to join the Kent Police and, with new son in tow, moved to Ramsgate, where they also welcomed a daughter, Emma, into the world. On the move again, Mary and John and family came to Winnipeg in the early eighties looking for new opportunities in Canada. John worked for the Province while Mary found work at a number of retail stores, eventually becoming Manager of the Bombay Company in Polo Park. After retiring, Mary enjoyed hobbies such as sewing, crafts, reading and volunteering with the cat rescue centre. She also became a proud grandmother with the births of Olivia in 2008 and Jane in 2011. Mary is survived by her sisters Betty and Bridie (and their husbands Tony McNally and Noel Howley). She is also survived by half siblings Paul, Kevin, Henry, Patrick, Kathleen, Anne, Bridget and Angela, Kevin and Garry. It's complicated. Mary will be missed by friends Patty and Wayne and numerous friends, neighbours, nephews and nieces. As per her wishes there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

My heart felt thoughts and condolences are sent to Uncle John, Kevin and Emma and families. I am so pleased that I was able to meet with Auntie Mamie and Uncle John 5/6 years ago in a visit to Ireland. Having had very fond memories from childhood it was wonderful to speak to and spend time with Auntie Mamie. Rest in Peace Auntie Mamie x - Posted by: carmel Hicks (nee Mc Nally ) (Niece ) on: May 30, 2015

We first knew Mary as our cat sitter, then as a good friend. She was marvellous to be around and had quite a good sense of humour.. She always seemed to brighten the day. - Posted by: Sandra and Michael Hickey (Friends) on: May 30, 2015
