(AGNES HILDA) JOAN WHALLEY (nee WHITE) 1918 - 2015 Joan passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2015 at Charleswood Care Centre, at the age of 96 years. Left to mourn Joan are her four daughters, Eileen Espinosa, Leslie (David) Frye, Geraldine Tooth and Doreen Whalley. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Evans (Wally). In 1948 Joan started curling at the Deer Lodge Curling Club. From there she became totally involved in the sport and the executive management of curling. Rising from the committees and chairs, she was elected first as President of DLCC in 1959, then as President of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association in 1966 and finally as President of the Canadian Ladies Curling Association in 1975. Joan's passion, in addition to her family, was being involved in the promotion and teaching of curling to junior girls. She was the CLCA liaison on the committee which developed the Curl Canada Instructional Program. Joan's first love was to teach junior girls and she was excited when two of her granddaughters were old enough for her to teach. In 1977 Joan was an honoured recipient of the Canadian Silver Jubilee medal in appreciation of worthy and devoted service. In 1980 she helped to organize the Business Girls Curling League at DLCC and was President in 1983. In 1981 Joan was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and in 1990 into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame as a Builder.
