Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBRIAN JOHN KAHLER February 3, 1945 - June 18, 2015 After a hard fought battle with liver cancer, Brian took God's hand and quietly slipped away from us. Predeceased by his parents John and Chrystyna, brothers Peter (Anne), Charlie (Betty), Eddie (Kay) and sister Rose (Stan). He is survived by his wife of 23 years Louise; children Jennifer, Ben (Lisa), Chris (Brenda); sisters Margaret Hersley (Raymond), Pauline Robinson (Doug) and Kaye Lynn (Ken); grandchildren Jake and Hannah, beloved Mother and Father-in-law Elene and David Oakley, brother-in-law David Oakley (Lesley) and many nieces and nephews he was so fond of. Born and educated in Winnipeg, Brian was employed with Transport (Environment Canada) for 37 years first as a meteorological technician, inspector and regional manager residing in NWT, Quebec, Ontario and Winnipeg. His work often took him across the country, including the High Arctic. He was instrumental in recruiting many meteorological personnel who carry on the good work of the weather service today. After retirement his efforts turned to the private sector both as a volunteer and entrepreneur. He established weekly newspapers in Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Fort Frances and Selkirk. He also opened picture framing outlets in Fort Frances and Selkirk. Wherever he resided he was active in the community as a volunteer, serving as director on many boards including: Chamber of Commerce in Selkirk and Fort Frances, Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship, Rainy River Future Development Corporation, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Gimli Lutheran Church and Kiwanis Club Gimli & District. In later years he turned to writing, publishing a novel (The Eureka Incident) and short stories with the assistance of friends in the Lake Winnipeg Writer's Group and closer friends in "SWAG". An ardent sportsman, he was a True Blue and Winnipeg Jet's fan, littered local golf course woods with an incurable slice, and cherished regular games of chance with friends John, Tom, Brent, Cliff and Dave. Service will be held at Gimli Lutheran Church on Tuesday, August 4th at 11:00 a.m., honorary pallbearers are Dave Law, Cliff Hines, Tom Dame, John Yarema, Sam Sekhon and Pamela Larner. Final arrangements in care of Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, Winnipeg. Extra gratitude is extended to the nursing staff at Gimli Community Hospital who cared for Brian so gently in his final days, and to Gordon Payne who was constantly at Brian's side in his time of need. Flowers are graciously and gratefully declined, if friends so desire a donation may be made to Gimli Lutheran Church, the Kiwanis Gimli and District Club or to a charity of one's choice. Dear Louise and family, Brian was obviously a wonderful man, who was very highly regarded. I will always be impressed by his generous spirit and encouragement of his family and friends to explore the world around them. With heartfelt sympathy for your profound loss, love and hugs, Lilia Elianne - Posted by: Lilia Lawler (Cousin of Louise) on: Jul 20, 2015

A person that I am happy to say was my friend. Condolences to his family. He is now on a new journey that he cannot send back press releases on his experiences. The world is probably a better place for his travelling through it. I will miss him. - Posted by: Don Mandryk (friend) on: Jul 01, 2015

My heart goes out to you, Louise, and family......Although I didn't know Brian very well, I enjoyed working on church council with him, & that dinner we had. He had a wonderful sense of humor (as do you). My family have just experienced a family cancer death, and I know how hard it can be. Take care, my prayers are with you. My Deepest Sympathy to Louise and the Family. Brian was kind person and eager to always lend a helping hand when asked. I met Brian at church when he served on council and at Kiwanis where he put in his full efforts at any task he was asked to volunteer for. And, when he became ill he faced his illness with all the strength he had and fought hard to the end. I shall always remember him and he will be missed. - Posted by: Richard Evasiuk (Friend) on: Jun 20, 2015
