EMILY (JOAN) MONTEITH It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emily Joan Monteith (nee Smith). Joan was 62 years of age and fought a strong battle against Cancer for the past year. She peacefully passed away, with her daughters by her side, in the late evening hours of Sunday, June 21, 2015 after being well cared for at Grace Hospice. Left to cherish Joan's memory are daughters, Lisa and Jacqueline of Winnipeg; brother Lyle of Pierson; two grandchildren, Ella Emily and Simon Bradley, and she was "their person". Joan treasured her many close friends who will remember her fun personality and kind spirit. She was predeceased by her parents, Delbert and Doris; sister Ruth; brother Irvin, and son-in-law Brad. On August 24, 1952 Joan was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. She grew up in the prairie town of Pierson, located in the southwest corner of Manitoba. Joan was eager to spread her wings and at 15 moved to the big city of Winnipeg, Manitoba where she spent her adult life. She was a proud mother, adult learner and dedicated to her lifelong work at Hudson's Bay Company and years at Deer Lodge Centre. Joan was a woman who was always smiling and loved life. She cherished her family and enjoyed the small pleasures of having coffee with friends, spending time with her grandchildren, sewing and making crafts, eating a great sandwich, taking road trips, watching movies and a daily dose of Coronation Street. Joan loved our Manitoba summers and was happiest with a day at the beach or taking a walk in the park. Joan laughed every day. She knew life was short and not to take yourself too seriously. It helped that every morning she woke up with hair and eyebrows that stood straight up and could not be tamed. This was a running family joke. We will honour Joan's life on Saturday, June 27, 2015 in Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Avenue at Mount Royal Road in Winnipeg. For those who wish, viewing will take place starting at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service to begin at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Brenda Gibson will officiate the ceremony. Reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate a full life that ended too soon. Interment will take place in Pierson, Manitoba at a later date. We would like to thank all of Mom's friends who supported her through the past year with phone calls, visits, taking her to medical appointments, shopping and coffee outings, making meals, cleaning her apartment and, most of all loving her. We know this love kept her happy, motivated and extended her life. In lieu of flowers, donations will be welcomed for family to purchase a tribute park bench within Assiniboine Park. Please contact Assiniboine Park Conservancy at 204-927-6001 and indicate that your donation is in recognition of Joan Monteith. • When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. ― Henri J.M. Nouwen May your Mom finally be at peace and out of the pain that she has gone through battling her sickness. She is with my parents now and they will be looking down upon us, now and forever. She is truly missed and will never be forgotten for her kind heart, warmth, and wonderful person that she is. - Posted by: James Mackay (Family Friend) on: Jun 25, 2015
