Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD MYER It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and dad, Edward Myer. He died peacefully on June 27, 2015 in Surrey, BC. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Alex Myer and is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen; his son Ken and daughter-in-law Carrie; daughter Donna; grandsons Brett and Karsten; sister Edith Matthews and brother-in-law Mike. Ed was born in Winnipeg, MB on October 20, 1927 and spent most of his younger years growing up in Winnipeg's North End. At an early age he developed a talent for technical drawing as well as a lifelong love of aviation. Summers were spent at the Winnipeg Flying Club scrounging rides in training aircraft whenever he could. The War years saw the Myer family move first to Fort William, ON where he worked part-time at Canadian Car and Foundry's Aviation Division. The family then moved to Toronto when Alex went to work for deHavilland Canada until the end of the war, allowing Ed to finish high school. Ed moved to Vancouver to seek his fortune for a couple of years in various industries before returning to Winnipeg to join the fledgling Trans Canada Airlines as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. He loved the challenge of diagnosing and repairing all types of aircraft engines in the fleet. He advanced through TCA (now known as Air Canada) until his retirement just over 40 years later as Manager of Maintenance Publications. In 1953, Ed met Helen McDonald who worked with his sister Edith at TCA. They were married in April, 1955 in Clandeboye, MB. Soon afterwards he designed and built their first house on Garfield St. in Winnipeg. Ken arrived in June 1957 and in 1960 Ed was transferred to the new Air Canada base in Montreal and their new home in nearby Roxboro. The family was complete when Donna arrived in July 1961. While in Montreal, Ed was active in the United Church and Scouts, where he was a Head Scoutmaster. Ed and Helen participated in 10 pin and lawn bowling and were members of several square dance clubs in Quebec and BC. The family often travelled across Canada to reunite with relatives and enjoyed many memorable vacations in Europe, California, Florida and the Caribbean. In more recent years, the family vacationed together in Hawaii, Arizona and shared a trip to Disneyland and a Mexican cruise to celebrate Mom and Dad's 50th anniversary. Two years later we shared a wonderful vacation to Disney World. Upon their retirement in 1989, Ed and Helen moved to Surrey B.C. where many family and friends had settled over the years. He couldn't have been more proud of his grandsons, Brett and Karsten. He would watch their hockey and football games whenever he could and shared stories of airplanes and his love of animation. The boys will never forget the time they spent with their Grandpa. Ed will be dearly missed by his close knit family and many friends, as well as his many cherished nieces and nephews who will never forget their Uncle Ed. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Valley View Cemetery (Arbor Chapel) at 14644 - 72nd Avenue; Surrey B.C.
