Grant was a true healer. We were co-workers at HSC, and he became my personal physician in 1989.Through the years he helped me survive the most difficult challenges of my life, often seeing me at the end of the day, when the other staff had already gone home. Grant always had time for those in need. He was gracious, kind and treated you as a human being worthy of respect. I am alive today, because of his caring, professionalism, stubborn determination to make the system work. Bless you Grant. Sometimes a sad departure is required, for an old spirit to be reborn in the heart of a child. - Posted by: Johannes Norberg (Patient and Friend) on: Dec 14, 2015

Doctor, friend & music lover. Grant was a kind & thorough doctor. He walked me through several issues in the 20+ years he was my doctor. In fact during one period, he literally saved my life. We also connected at many concerts over the years. Me..... The official caterer & Grant....the official Doctor on call backstage. Those were fun years. Grant had a wonderful sense of humour & observation. His ability to read below the surface with his patients was uncanny. Always knew when & where to refer. I am grateful to have had him as my doctor for so long. We moved to Calgary for 4 years & when we returned, I was bummed that he could not take me back. RIP Grant! đź’ť - Posted by: Naomi Blake Marshll (Doctor/music lover) on: Oct 25, 2015

The first time I met Grant was at Primary Care at HSC some 20 years ago. It wasn’t the longer-than-mine hair but the stethoscope in his pocket that gave him away. For all intents and purposes he could have been another musician buddy. In a way he was, since every ensuing appointment had some “musical content” or other. But his doctoring and interest in my life and family was always there too. To his family, I offer my most sincere condolences. Grant was much more than a doctor. He was a much respected man because he truly cared and listened. Rest easy, my friend, and thank you. - Posted by: Maurice (Moe) Hogue (Patient - friend) on: Jul 18, 2015

Maryann and I were saddened to hear of Grant's passing, and we send our deepest condolences to his family. Apart from being one of Grant's medical school classmates, he and I carpooled to class virtually every day in the early years. I have very fond memories of our daily commutes. - Posted by: David G Benditt MD (Medical School Classmate and car-pool mate) on: Jul 16, 2015

Dr. "Grant" was my "Health Care Provider" for Thirty-four years. He directed me to the "Best" Specialists available, when it was necessary, who are all the most attentive, caring, devoted and "Professional" in their respectful fields of "THE HEALING ARTS .....” Having contacted Grant on Saturday,4 Jul 15, I wasn't able to chat, he sounded too weak. "Farewell My Friend...." You won't be forgotten .... "R.I.P." Most respectfully, Ray STROKON - Posted by: Ray Strokon ((Greatful Patient)) on: Jul 13, 2015

Grant is my best friend Lise's dad. I can remember when we were teens going to the lake and at night we all fell asleep with our ears filled with Bob Dylan or Neil Young. Grant liked his music and when he was at the lake you could tell he was in heaven. Always puttering around and fixing something but also seriously relaxing and sharing time. This year, I have been working at the Health Action Center and continue to hear testimonies from patients and staff of Grant's care that any health care provider would only hope to hear after a lifetime of service. You will be fondly remembered and celebrated. - Posted by: Nathalie (friend) on: Jul 12, 2015

Dr. Grant, you were a man of integrity and a skilled doctor with compassion and understanding above the rest. You hold a dear place in our thoughts and hearts of appreciation and honor to have known you. You were often our angel in life and now free from suffering to soar once again, above the rest. Thank you my friend, rest in peace. My deepest condolences to your family. - Posted by: Marlene and Nathan (friends) on: Jul 12, 2015

Grant was such a calm, gentle and sweet man. When you mix those qualities with his intelligence, it was no surprise that he became such a wonderful & caring doctor. I also loved his dry, yet wicked sense of humour. Granny - You will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Tim Dennehy (Old Victoria Beach friend) on: Jul 11, 2015

Dr. Benningen was a great doctor who had tons of compassion for his clients. He would always have lots of stories to tell me about back in the day when he would attend rock concerts and the bands he came in contact with. Always would take a time out for anyone in need. I was very saddened to hear of his diagnosis. This is truly one doctor that will be missed. Rest in peace Dr. Benningen. It was nice to have worked with you for 5 years! My condolences to his family, especially Audrey. - Posted by: Heidi Cheang (co-worker) on: Jul 11, 2015

What a shock. I've known Grant since grade 6 at Queenston school. Then River Heights junior high. Finally medical school in 1968–1972. What a friendly genial fellow. Always happy. Always good news. Not much contact since the 1980s when I moved to California, but whenever I did visit, shifted right back into schooldays mode. I remember walking the underground hallways of the medical center in 1968; me worried about gross anatomy, Grant worried about hitting his head on the pipes :-). The world is a colder less friendly place now. Sad loving greetings to his family and friends. - Posted by: David Rusen M.D. (Classmate medical school 1972) on: Jul 11, 2015

I was stunned when I attended an appointment on Main St at Access Dntn to find out Grant had been forced to retire due to his illness. He was my first doctor as an adult, saw me thru some tricky events, and was always utmost in kindness, understanding and carefully explaining things.
