Date of Passing: Jun 16, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN DAVID DE VERE HUNT 1929 - 2015 On June 16, 2015 Dave died at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock. He is survived by his wife Carol; their four children Laurie (John), David (Georgina), Eric (Margaret), Carey (Greg); grandchildren Ryan (Alexandra), Olivia (Kevin), Rafe (Olivia), Grace, Erin, Lia, Cameron; three great-granddaughters; sister Margaret Carter; and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Pearl Hunt, brother Douglas, sister Katherine, and son-in-law Warren. Dave was born in Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba. He worked as a journalist for the Dauphin Herald and Winnipeg Tribune and free-lanced. He joined the CBC in 1962, working in both radio and television for 26 years. He loved working the CBC decisions desk in many provincial and federal elections. He was a talented musician and athlete, able to play any instrument or sport handed to him. He attended baseball spring training camp in Indiana, played goal for the Dauphin Kings and played in countless bands and orchestras. He relished seeing these abilities in his children and grandchildren. Annual family trips in a Ford Fairlane topped with Dave's ingenious handmade car top camper allowed him to share his love of nature and his ideal Canada. When everyone had had enough of the tight quarters, he and Carol had happy times together at Manigotagan and Star Lake and travelled extensively. One memorable holiday was spent bicycling in Cuba and another navigating a canal boat in France. Dave loved Carol deeply. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage, including 27 years by the sea in White Rock, where Dave was finally able to achieve a few of his sailing dreams with his sailboat Saluki. A deep thinker and a mentor, Dave liked nothing more than a good, long political discussion with family or friends over a bottle of good red wine. He was passionate about family and community, genealogy, language and grammar, critical thinking, and social justice. He worried about preserving the world for future generations. Mindless development incensed him. Dad, this is only a draft. We wish you were still here to review it and help us produce a better final copy. We miss you. The family will commemorate Dave's life at a later date. If desired, donations in Dave's memory may be made to the Peace Arch Hospital or the Wilderness Committee.
