Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET SUE LAFRENIERE (nee HOFF) 1951 - 2015 It is with deep sorrow that we announce Margaret Lafreniere, aged 63, of Cartier MB, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 surrounded by her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Joseph; daughters Julia (Tim) of Winnipeg and Katie (Mike) of Edmonton; son David of Winnipeg; grandson Austin; brother Steven (Shirley) Hoff of Firdale; sister Berniece Verduzco of Beaumont, Texas; nephew Harry (Nancy) Hoff of Stonewall; niece Christine (Bob) Robinson of Carberry, and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Alex and Helen Hoff of Carberry, and was looking forward to seeing them and many other loved relatives in heaven. Margaret was born in Emmett, Idaho on December 6, 1951 and as a child enjoyed riding horses and travelling throughout the U.S. visiting with family and friends. Margaret played university basketball and went on to coach all three of her children's and grandson's teams. She retired from teaching in 2013 following a rewarding career, and particularly enjoyed working with special needs and gifted children in Neepawa, Norway House, Portage la Prairie, The Pas and St. John Brebeuf Catholic School in Winnipeg Manitoba. Along the way, she made many lasting friends at all the places where she lived and worked. She was particularly close to her "Yahoo" buddies that she travelled with at least annually for the past several years, all of whom she'd known since grade school. Another group of ladies that she often spent time with and spoke of were "The FONS" friends. Prayers will be held at a later date at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. in Winnipeg followed by a funeral mass on the following day at the same location. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Margaret's memory to Humankind International, 251-B Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1N8, an organization which Margaret held very dear to her heart and served as a board member prior to and after her retirement. Margaret and I met in Grade 8 when she and her family moved to Carberry from USA. Her American "accent" and basketball skills were noticeable. We enjoyed a great friendship through high school, playing on sports teams (basketball, volleyball, track & field) - she taught me how to ride a horse and we explored the back roads of the district. I always felt welcome at the Hoff home. On one special occasion, I accompanied Marg on a road trip to North Dakota where we attended a family member's wedding - it was quite a breakout for two teenagers. Margaret's parents were very trusting of her driving skills and maturity. After grad from High School, we connected in Winnipeg as Marg studied at U of W and I was at St Boniface nursing school. We enjoyed our first legal drink together - a bottle of wine at the Spaghetti Factory- when the drinking age changed to 18. Our greatest adventure was a trip to the Yukon in 1978- by train to Prince Rupert, ferry boat up the west coast to Skagway, backpack hike over the Chilkoot Pass and hitching onward to Whitehorse, Dawson city and then a flight back home. Backpacking was new to Margaret but she hefted the pack like she'd been doing it for a long time. Margaret was a strong, capable and caring woman and lived her life with integrity. Her greatest pride were her kids. I appreciated connecting with her again over the last year or so… and am so very sad that we will not get to enjoy each other's company now with the extra time found in retirement. My condolences to Joe, Julie, Katie, David and Austin and other members of her family… she will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Debbie Lee (friend from Carberry days) on: Jul 21, 2015
