LAURA (LAURIE) FRANCISCA SOPHIA MARIA SCHELLEKENS (nee KERVEL) Peacefully on July 14, 2015, at the age of 84, our mother and Oma (grandmother) was called to Heaven to join her late husband Peter. She was predeceased by her parents Wybrandus and Sophia, stepmother Maria; brother Jean; sister-in-law Ria, and son-in-law Garnet. She is survived by one brother Wybo; sister Josephine (Cees); sister-in-law Jenny (Jean); son Rick (Lori) with grandchildren Dwight (Becky), Michelle (Richard), Kaylene (Tony), Chelsey, Matthew, Joshua and Ben; daughter Jeanette (Tim) with grandchildren Eric, Cole, Brock, Angus, Jamie, Curt, Desirae and TJ; son Wayne (Kris) with grandchildren Mia and Nicole; her 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Laurie was born in Padang Brahrang, Indonesia when it was a Dutch colony. After the war her family moved back to the Netherlands and Mom became a Montessori teacher. Laurie came to Canada in 1954, with her brother Wybo and she settled in Vancouver and was a nurse's aide. Laurie and Peter met in Vancouver and were married on August 11, 1962. They moved to Winnipeg and lived there since. Laurie worked at Eaton's but stayed home to raise their three children. Later she worked at University of Manitoba. She volunteered wherever she could and was a CWL member and Cub leader. She loved playing cards and taking the occasional gambling bus trip to the States. She made friends easily and left a very positive impression on anyone she met. She still kept in touch with several friends from her childhood. She always helped people wherever she went, and volunteered for 16 years at Tache Nursing Home. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations in Laurie's memory to the Stroke Association of Manitoba, Children's Hospital or Amnesty International. The family would like to thank Dr. Karen Appel who was outstanding in taking care of Laurie in her final days at Seven Oaks Hospital, and all the staff at Holy Family Home who made her brief stay there memorable. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, MB.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Rick, Wayne and Jeanette I was saddened to hear Auntie Laurie had passed on. I shall miss dropping in to see her on trips through Winnipeg. She was always welcoming and interested in what the family was doing and how growing. Although she was overwhelmed when all 9 dropped in when we were young. My family shall miss her Rita, Gary Kendra, Aaron and Brendan. - Posted by: Rita Wojtyniak (niece) on: Jul 26, 2015

  • The first time I met Laurie was through CWL. I was amazed by her deep faith, her spirituality. I would ask Laurie many questions about life things. Laurie would always answer with a quote from the bible. Laurie was fun, and a good sport, always will to help. "the dutch poke" was her thing for good luck when we played cards. Our card group still do Laurie's "dutch poke" Thank you Laurie for being apart of my life and for all the good advice. I will miss you. - Posted by: Gillian Lavallee (friend) on: Jul 24, 2015

  • I knew Laurie for many years through Monique and our Rumoli group. More recently we had rekindled our friendship during visits at the hospital and nursing home - she always greeted me with her friendly smile and I always left with lifted spirits! Enjoy eternity with your beloved Peter - you deserve the best and will be missed by so many. - Posted by: Nicci De Ruyck (Friend) on: Jul 24, 2015

  • Laurie was one of my dearest and longest friends. She and I first met through the Catholic Women's League. Laurie fast became a friend to me and my family. My son Jeremy was only 3 when I first met Laurie. Throughout our friendship we shared so much: the marriage of her children, the birth of her grandchildren, the loss of her dearest and best friend, Peter, her husband, her illnesses, many nights of fun - be it the casino or rumoli - our groups of friends - our C.W.L. sisters - my move to Ontario and so much more in between. Laurie was there for me when no one else was, and our friendship could never fail, not even with the miles between us. I spoke to Laurie often throughout the last years while I lived in Ontario, and saw her every time we went back to Winnipeg. We have lost a great woman and we will miss her dearly, but now she is with her dance partner, and I know she is looking down on me and saying, Monique, don't cry for me because I am now at rest. - Posted by: Monique Duval-Lavallee (Good, long friend.) on: Jul 21, 2015

  • Sadly, I never had the fortune to meet Mrs. Schellekens in person. I do however work with her son Wayne who is a man of integrity, faith, humour, and commitment. I can easily imagine that her other children are also ones of whom she is very proud. I was blessed with stories from Wayne ranging from the extreme difficulties she faced as a young girl, to her "kleenex winnings" at bingo in the nursing home (they call the numbers in english FIRST you know!). Clearly she is a very special lady with strength and joy in her heart who succeeded in the most important and most difficult job that God puts before us - raising a family. I look forward to more stories as time goes on. I have faith she has claimed her place in Heaven and is smiling down at the family she is certainly very proud of. - Posted by: Fred Oberbuchner (Colleague of Wayne) on: Jul 20, 2015
