DAVID BOONOV It is with great sadness that we announce David's sudden passing on July 22, 2015 at the age of 85 years. David was survived by his adoring wife of 58 years, Janet (nee Olin) and his son, Stuart Boonov, daughter, Sharon Boonov Yanofsky (Albert Yanofsky) and grandchildren Jocelyne, Aaron, Evelyn (Chris) and Noah. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anne Boonov, his brother, Ralph Boonov and sister, Rebecca Bertulli. David was born on June 7, 1930 and raised in the north end of Winnipeg during the height of the Depression and the aftermath of the Second World War. He attended Machray School; St. John's Tech and the University of Manitoba, graduating as a pharmacist. David briefly owned his own pharmacy but worked most of his life at the Municipal Hospitals, retiring as department head. David continued to work until he was 83; finally retiring only after filling prescriptions became difficult as he pushed his walker. David grew up in a home where Jewish culture rather than tradition were celebrated, Yiddish being the spoken language at home. It wasn't until David married Janet and the rest of the Olin family that he began to also value his religious roots. All of these events shaped David to become the man we all knew and loved. David was a true people person- he was liked by every person he ever met. He loved to go to the Wellness Centre, not so much to exercise but to schmooze with his buddies and he loved to surprise anyone who was Filipino by greeting or thanking them in Tagalog. David was well known for having an uncanny knack at remembering people and where he met them, even if he only met them for a brief time as a youth. It was not unusual for David to bump into someone he had not seen in 60 or 70 years and to be able to call them by name. He always put others before himself but his family was his core. Community service was important and commonplace in his life, he was a founding member of Temple Shalom having served two terms as President and was active in the Masons serving as Master of his lodge. David loved to travel with Janet. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on a Mediterranean cruise and spent their winters in Las Vegas or Mexico. But the most special holidays were spent with his family in the little popup trailer each summer. David was a real animal lover, but he especially loved his "kids" Snowball, Biscuit and most recently Sable. He wore a huge smile as she visited him in the hospital just before his passing. Services were held on July 26, 2015 at Temple Shalom with Cantor Len Udow presiding. Pallbearers were Albert Yanofsky, Aaron Yanofsky, Gerald Olin, Elliot Olin, Arthur Olin and Alan Daien. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Jocelyne Yanofsky, Evelyn Yanofsky and Noah Boonov and lifelong friends Douglas Kellough and Harvey Cantin. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Seven Oaks for all the care they gave David during his short illness. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in David's honor to the charity of your choice.
