Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARLENE PALATNICK Marlene Palatnick passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday, July 23, 2015 at the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 80. A loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Marlene never put anything, including her own needs, before those of her family, even when faced with her own hardships and personal challenges. She will be sadly missed. Marlene is survived by her son Wesley Palatnick (Lorraine); and her daughters Robin Geller (Phil), and Gayle Palatnick. She also leaves to mourn her brother Lewis Gershman (Val); grandchildren Carrie (Azriel), Kimberly (Allan), Jeffrey, Mark and Jordan; great-grandchildren Noah and Nathan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Marlene was predeceased by her mother Bella Gershman, father Joseph Gershman and husband Harry (Hatz) Palatnick. Marlene was widowed at age 32 and worked hard, first in the family business, Gershman Produce and later at a number of other enterprises, while raising her three children as a single mother. She took great pride in her family and their acomplishments. They were her greatest joy. Marlene was a volunteer for many years at the Israel pavilion at Folklorama. She also volunteered at the YMHA reunion as well as the St. John's High School 75th reunion (or Tech as she called it). These events had many fond memories for her. In later years, she enjoyed attending activities at the Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre and the Rady Centre where she had many friends and relatives. Marlene struggled with a number of health issues that eventually resulted in her entering the Simkin Centre where she resided for 10 months until her untimely passing. Thank you to the staff of the Simkin Centre Weinberg 1 for their care. She loved playing bingo and attending the many outings. Thank you to the staff at Health Sciences Centre who looked after her many times over the years. As well, a special thank you to Dr. Ruth Simkin and the staff of Health Action Centre/Access Downtown and the many home care staff that enabled Marlene to stay in her home as long as she did. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 26, at Congregation Etz Chaim with internment at the Bnay Abraham cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre Therapeutic Recreation Program, Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre or to a charity of your choice.

If there is a spiritual life beyond our comprehension , or a parallel life or universe which only can be by God alone - it would be a desire to see Marlene again. As an employee in her families business, I being very young - she treated me as if her child. She was always so kind to me in every way. One time, and in my great depression as an abused child, I didn't show up to work for 2 days. She found me out and wanted to get an ambulance for me. Without detail, I came around and was able to speak that I will be alright. She noticed the lack of food or drink in my lonely one room and gave me a few dollars and I promised to come back to work as she said customers are waiting for you. Now , I'm very old with perhaps 10 yrs to go, but Marlene and her mother Bella gave me the hope to survive and love life as just living is beautiful without the pangs of pain. It's been said we are always alive for as long as you are remembered - and I will always remember you and your son. If there is a merciful God and I hope so, I dearly hope you are over the river of Jordan. From me, all my blessing and a tear for your passing. Sad, so very sad....... goodbye Marlene. - Posted by: Ron Mokelkie (Worker of the early business) on: Apr 14, 2018
