LEONARD (SHELLEY) SCHELLENBERG On Saturday, July 18, 2015, Len passed away at the age of 83 in Abbotsford, BC after a challenging battle with Alzheimers. Len was born to Peter and Mary Schellenberg on November 23, 1931 in the Rural Municipality of Rhineland in Manitoba, today known as Altona. He is survived by his second wife, Ann Marie; his children, Robert Schellenberg, Debbi (Dave) Magee and Donna (Eric) Schmidt; his grandchildren, Ian, Kara, Corbin, Trevor and Bradley; his siblings, Verna (Abe) Hiebert, Edgar (Marge) Schellenberg, Esther (Ben) Hiebert, Leona (John) Driedger, Delores (Ralph) Gammelseter, Sandi Neufeld and Arlene (Les) McLaughlin, many stepchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Joyce. Len grew up on the family farm near Altona and in Rosenfeld, Manitoba. In the mid-1950s, he worked building new highways throughout Saskatchewan, where he met Joyce, and married in 1957. Together, they moved to Winnipeg and eventually settled in St. James where he raised his family and lived for over 40 years. He was a journeyman lineman and spent many years working for Winnipeg Hydro. He had many hobbies throughout his years such as stamp/coin collection, taxidermy, curling, and computers. In the mid-1970s he turned one of his hobbies into a wholesale/retail business and opened Assiniboia Fish Farm catering to aquarium fish and many other pets and exotic animals. When his business closed, he returned to Winnipeg Hydro holding positions as Supervisor and then Superintendent until his retirement in 1994. In 2002, Len moved to Abbotsford, BC. He met and married Ann Marie in 2008 and they enjoyed travelling, playing games and spending time with their grandchildren. His quiet, gentle nature and sense of humour will be missed. An informal Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at The Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer Society at www.altzheimer.ca

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Our remembrance of " Shelley" goes back a number of years when Helen and I were courting. There are many fond memories when he, Shelley, was always there, with us. Sometimes, it would seem he was like a shadow, but we really have wonderful memories of him. We were very sorry to miss the memorial service. You see, Helens' brother Henry passed away at that time. God Bless you of Shelleys family who are grieving and so do we grieve with you. - Posted by: Willam ( Bill) and Helen Kroeker (Former neighbor and a close friend from early years in Rosenfeld, Manitoba.) on: Aug 11, 2015

  • Shelley & Joyce were our neighbours & friends for decades. Bev & I could count on them when we needed help of any kind. Remember the morning Shelley left for Abbotsford- his thunderbird was packed. We truly missed Shelley( and still do) but Bev & I are really pleased it was a great move. Our sincere sympathy to all the family. Bev, Art &family. (Bryant). - Posted by: Shelley Schellenberg (neighbour & friend(a great friend)) on: Jul 28, 2015

  • My deepest condolences to the Schellenberg family. Shelly and my dad, Denis, worked and drove together to the Hydro for many years. I can remember going over to his house to look at the fish in his basement. My first fish tank came from his place. I'm sure Shelly and my dad are sharing some good stories again. - Posted by: Marcel Hogue (family friend) (Friend of the family) on: Jul 25, 2015
