RUBY GERTRUDE PLATT Ruby Gertrude Platt (nee Jory) passed away peacefully on July 22, 2015 at Lion's Manor, in Winnipeg at the age of 93. She was surrounded by her loving family and will be sadly missed. Mom was born on April 8, 1922 to Leonard and Amy Jory. She grew up on the family farm in the Tummel District, south of Roblin, Manitoba. She was the second youngest of five children, all of whom predeceased her. Ruby had many happy childhood memories, and always felt a special affection for the families, neighbors and friends who farmed in the area, and for the kids she went to the one room school with. Tummel reunions were thoroughly enjoyed and never missed. In 1945, Mom entered the registered nursing program at St. Boniface hospital, and stayed in residence there. Following graduation in 1947, Ruby worked as a public health nurse in Virden, Swan River, and Winnipeg. She also worked part time at the old Grace Hospital on Arlington Street until it closed in 1967 and moved to its new location in St. James. Mom really loved nursing and missed it when she stopped. Ruby married Barry ("Bud") Platt on September 11, 1954 in the United Church at Tummel. They had three children, Arthur, Ruth and Esther, and lived all of their married lives in Winnipeg. In 1968, mom and dad bought a tent trailer which was basically a canvas tent on wheels. As a family we did a lot of camping, and those were among the happiest of our family times. One of the big treats was that mom would make pancakes, everything was made from scratch, both the pancakes and maple syrup. They were made in a cast iron frying pan, and each one was the size of the frying pan. As there was only one pan, and five in the family, we had to wait our turn, but it was well worth the wait. Mom was a very good cook. Mom was predeceased by dad in 2001, and is survived by her son Arthur (Kathy), and her daughters Ruth (Wayne), and Esther (Leonard). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brian, Alex, Andy, Holly, Madison, Elizabeth (Eric), Isaac, and Ian, as well as her great-grandson Lincoln. Our thanks go to the staff at Lion's Manor for their excellent care of mom for the past two and one-half years. A celebration of her life was held in Winnipeg on July 27. Mom is buried at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg, beside the love of her life, Bud. For anyone who wishes, donations in memory of Ruby can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Ruby was an amazing lady with an amazing and patient family. These last years in a person's life can be challenging. It takes a special family to maneouver these challenges and changes. God Bless and take care. - Posted by: Lisa (Caregiver) on: Aug 06, 2015

  • To echo my sister's comments above, the Platts were our first Winnipeg friends when we moved to Winnipeg from Calgary in December 1963. I think I spent as much time @ 58 Home Street as I did at home! Arthur, Ruth, Esther...your mom was a warm, welcoming and 'no-nonsense' lady and I know how much you will all miss her. Please accept our sincere condolences in her passing. - Posted by: Mark Strople (Friend) on: Jul 27, 2015

  • So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing, Esther, Ruth and Arthur. She was such a kind and loving lady. I have many fond childhood memories at your home, whether at a sleep-over or given a jar to shake (to make butter) while I waited for Esther in the kitchen! It was your mother who befriended our family when we moved to Winnipeg back in 1963, making you our "oldest" friends! - Posted by: Tracy Christie (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2015
